Schedule management is underrated. Your studio might have a film that screams “hit,” you might market the picture like a genius, and you might have the hottest actor in the world. But sometimes, films are filling a void left empty for casual audience goers, and the demand is pent-up not for a specific film, but rather a specific type of film. In this case, we’re talking about “Identity Thief,” now in line to score the year’s biggest three-day opening with $36 million, making it the best R-rated comedy opening ever in February.

It's a big weekend for names. Steven Soderbergh is back for one last go-round on the theatrical circuit (read our retrospective of his work here). Indiewood favorites of this past fall, John Hawkes and Bill Murray, show up to remind us how fantastic they are (and why they should have gotten Oscar noms). Even Charlie Sheen makes a (rather central) appearance. It's a big weekend for experiments too: surrealism, wuxia, and modern-day Shakespeare are here in full force. And, of course, no theatrical release bundle is complete without the "torture porn" of a middle school game gone adult and awry. So, uh, get ready. It was supposed to be so easy: Steven Soderbergh, for his last theatrical feature, was going to reteam with two of his favorite collaborators (handsome movie star George Clooney and his "Contagion" screenwriter Scott Z. Burns) for a big budget Hollywood spectacle, an adaptation of the television spy series "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." But, things slowly fell apart, first when an injury sidelined Clooney and then when Warner Bros, nervous about Soderbergh going with a potentially unproven star (and shaky about the budget and period setting), shuttered the project indefinitely. But, just as Soderbergh moved from "Moneyball" to "Haywire," so too did Burns and Soderbergh soldier on, this time turning to a project Burns had wanted to direct himself – a psychosexual thriller set in the pharmaceutical industry called "Side Effects."

This weekend, "Side Effects," Steven Soderbergh's final theatrical film, opens nationwide. An uncanny psychosexual thriller set against the backdrop of the pharmaceutical industry, it stars Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Rooney Mara, and Catherine Zeta-Jones and is, per our review, more than worth your money this weekend. While the film twists and turns and hops through genres, Soderbergh's been open about the movie being something of a tribute to a particular brand of psychosexual thrillers, with "Fatal Attraction" cited as one of the inspirations for the director.

After 2012 brought us “Haywire” and “Magic Mike” (with a little second unit work on “The Hunger Games”), and before his Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra,” he’s reteamed with his “Contagion” and “The Informant!” screenwriter Scott Z. Burns for the psychological thriller “Side Effects” starring Jude Law as a psychiatrist who prescribes a new antidepressant to a troubled young woman played by Rooney Mara.
