Annapurna Pictures Drops Out Of 'Side Effects' Over Casting; Potential Options Emerge, While Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Cast

Well, that was quick. Just one week after announcing it had signed on with Open Road, the distributors of the film, to co-finance Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller, “Side Effects,” Megan Ellison’s Annapurna pictures has backed out of the project (however, Open Road is staying put to distribute the film). But it's not all gloom and doom for "Side Effects," though, as Soderbergh's "Traffic" co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones has just signed onto the project (via Deadline).

You might not remember, but back when Steven Soderbergh's virus thriller "Contagion" hit theaters last fall, it also landed on over 250 IMAX screens. While the director has dabbled in many genres and styles over the years, we would've thought IMAX might prove to be more of a gimmick than an aesthetic he would pursue. But talking recently with the AV Club, Soderbergh admits he too was surprised to be taken with the format, calling the "Contagion" IMAX edition "awesome."

Aside from the deliberate pacing of his films and their haunting payoffs, Ti West is probably best known for doing exactly what he wants to do, when he wants to do it: after unsuccessfully attempting to remove his name from “Cabin Fever 2” when Lionsgate took the film away from him, he took on another sequel, “A Haunting in Georgia,” before deciding he didn’t want to undertake another project he couldn’t control from conception to completion. And looking at his films so far, he’s flaunted his individuality in the face of the rest of the industry’s genre dreck, avoiding trends or more easily-marketable ideas in favor of singular, original stories. All of which is why it comes as no small surprise that the next story fans will see from him is a segment from a found-footage anthology.

Exclusive: "Haywire" is set to hit theaters in just over a week, "Magic Mike" will land in cinemas this summer, and Steven Soderbergh will spend 2012 shooting two movies: the long-developing Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra" and, this spring, the thriller "The Side Effects." So needless to say, Steven Soderbergh is busy, and when we sat down to talk with him today, he told us that's just how he likes it.

Given the tenous state of financing these days, young directors are eager to pile their plates with as many options as possible, and “House of the Devil” director Ti West is no exception. Having told us at SXSW back in March that his next film may be the pharmaceutical testing/space film “The Side Effects,” West gave an update on the progress of that project to the crowd gathered in London for Film 4’s Fright Fest.

We caught up with the director for an interview and naturally, talk turned to what he might do next and while he's trying to keep it under wraps and is cagey about what details he can drop, he did give us a title and a taste of what the picture will be about.
