If you're at all into film and read movie blogs you know it's all about the Toronto International Film Festival for the next nine days (the festival started yesterday, September 8). Arguably the biggest film festival in the world aside from Cannes (who are probably more prestigious, but not quite as big), no other festival can boast the amount of stars and number of films that Toronto can. So there are several hundreds of flicks rolling out this week that cinephiles are eagerly anticipating.

While it didn't quite light up the critics when it premiered last month at the Cannes Film Festival, Pedro Almodóvar’s "The Skin I Live In" is still one that left people talking long after the lights came back up on the Croisette. Starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya and Marisa Paredes and based on Thierry Jonquet‘s novel “Mygale,” the film is a revenge tale that tells the story of a plastic surgeon (Banderas) on the hunt for the men who raped his daughter and in a blend of horror, thriller and melodrama which is a nice change of pace for Almodóvar.

But Will His Fans Follow Him?It is almost a given that detractors of the newest from Pedro Almodóvar will blurt out the film's baroque twists in their contortions to craft the glibbest dismissal possible; at the same time, a reluctance to spill those strange story points shouldn't be taken as an unequivocal endorsement. Of all the great modern European filmmakers, Almodóvar has recently felt like the one in most peril of turning his groove -- sumptuous surfaces, a tone between the operatic and the soap-operatic, each frame glossy with the delight of cinema like a lipstick smear from an ardent lover -- into a rut. With "The Skin I Live In," he's clearly jolted and wrested himself out of any potential rut; the concern is now, rather, what to make of the new territory he, and we, are in.

Plus 5 New PhotosCannes might be starting to draw to a close, but some of the most anticipated films of the festival are still to come; foremost among them Pedro Almodóvar's "The Skin I Live In," which screens tomorrow morning. We're always excited to see something new from the Spanish director. But considering his latest is not only something of a break from his comfort zone, a horror-tinged revenge tale, but it also marks his reunion with megastar Antonio Banderas for the first time since 1990's "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!," our anticipation levels are even higher than usual.

Starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya and Marisa Paredes, Pedro Almodóvar's latest film, "The Skin I Live In," has not yet screened to critics at the Cannes Film Festival, but it sounds like a tantalizing offering from one of cinema's consistently modern auteurs. Based on Thierry Jonquet's novel "Mygale," this revenge tale tells the story of a plastic surgeon (Banderas) on the hunt for the men who raped his daughter and looks like part horror, thriller and melodrama which is a nice change of pace for Almodóvar(though arguably, the film noir tones in the uneven, but ever-watchable "Broken Embraces," had some of those notes too).
