Hmmm, let's see. Movie about sarcastic, wise-cracking, potty-mouthed inanimate object ("Ted") does unexpected gangbusters at the box-office ($282 million worldwide and growing). Rival studio chief frowns while looking at box-office receipts, looks at his drones, points to a poster and says, "Why don't we have that?" "How do I get me one of those?"

Credit a canny expansion strategy that nabbed “The Help” the number one spot at the box office in its second weekend of release. Disney wisely banked on the film having more buzz than the slate of underwhelming new releases (not all of it positive), and after two weekends, it’s easily one of the season’s big success stories, as the picture has crested $70 million after only twelve days of release. The establishment has been encouraged - stories of the struggles of minorities highlighted by the heroism of a plucky white person of higher social strata are surefire earners, particularly if you market to families. Institutionalized racism at its most efficient.

Listen, I know what you expect from me. After last week's showing, you're expecting me to wax poetic about Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling and all the man beauty at the box office. Nope. What Chris Evans and I have is special and beautiful and I will not sully it with that cad, Ryan. I will leave that salivating to the male portion of the Playlist, as Mr. Gosling is the designated man crush. I don't need to build him up anymore than the rest of these dudes have. He's a great actor with a wonderful sense of personal style. THE END. All I will say about Mr. Craig is that I hope his bum is insured by Lloyd's of London for as much as J. Lo's booty. Anyway! In theaters this week! The improbably premised "Cowboys & Aliens"! Rom-com for men, "Crazy, Stupid Love"! "The Smurfs".... You know it's not a week without a dumb movie for children! Let's do it to it.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with movies, television and product for the younger, least discerning set. Overspecialization has flooded the market with the rise of the internet and 800-channel cable systems, but entertainment made solely for the least-challenged among us can lighten up the imagination of the tots and toddlers otherwise lost amidst mass media aimed at the older set.

Here's a new look at a probably terrible movie and no, that's not Gangsta Smurf standing to the right of Papa Smurf, but probably Grouchy Smurf. But doesn't it look like he's about to whip out a gat and bust a cap in yo ass? We don't want to run into that guy in a dark alley.
