'Frozen,' 'Planes' & 'The Smurfs 2' Among 19 Finalists For 2014 Animated Feature Oscar Nomination

After our own Drew Taylor declared "Frozen" to be a new Disney classic, perhaps you won't be too surprised to learn that it has been submitted and accepted as a finalist for Best Animated Feature Film. But don't get fooled. The only criteria for the 19 movies that made the cut seems to be that they meet the eligibility requirements so flops like "The Croods" and "Free Birds" along with critical punching bags like "Planes" and "The Smurfs 2" get the same consideration as Hayao Mizayaki's "The Wind Rises." 10 Of The Most Unnecessary Sequels Ever
If popcorn cinema in 2013 has been defined by one thing, it's been "Sharknado." But if cinema in 2013 has been defined by two things, it's "Sharknado" and... a glut of unnecessary and unwanted sequels. Think about it: "A Good Day to Die Hard," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "RED 2," "Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters" "Despicable Me 2," "Kick-Ass 2," "Planes," "The Smurfs 2," "Grown Ups 2." These aren't just movies that are creatively unnecessary, they are movies that it's hard to imagine anyone wanting (though in the Sandler movie's case people bizarrely did actually show up, to humanity's shame). Even "Monsters University," arguably the year's best sequel/prequel/spin-off, wasn't one that seemed that creatively in demand—it was better than expected, but hardly essential. This week sees yet another sequel few were clamoring to hit theaters: "Riddick," the third movie in the series started by 2000's "Pitch Black" and continued with 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick.". And it got us thinking about other egregious examples through the years.

Where was everyone this weekend? Clearly not at the movies. In top spot, "2 Guns" (review here) made $27 million, marking Universal's sixth box office number one film for the summer, but the weakest #1 opening of the summer so far. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur (who also directed the Mark Wahlberg-starring "Contraband" that opened at $24.3 million last year), the R-rated actioner paired Wahlberg with Denzel Washington. The studio was heading into the weekend expecting an opening in the low $20s, so perhaps thank the core contingent of Denzel and Wahlberg fans for the bump, as the movie marks their fifth and sixth best openings ever, respectively.

Smurfs 2
For those without small children and only a passing interest in registering what plasters New York City bus stops: yes, there is a movie called "The Smurfs 2." It's a sequel to an unreasonably successful movie called "The Smurfs" from way back in the year of our lord 2011. The original film starred Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays as a pair of modern day New Yorkers who are visited by The Smurfs, a clan of tiny blue humanoids who battled an evil wizard (Hank Azaria under rubbery prosthetics), who caused all sorts of mischief and kind of made the movie into an unofficial remake of "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." The sequel finds the same humans and a couple of the same Smurfs, only the location has been changed to Paris, France, and for some reason noted Irish actor Brendan Gleeson is along for the ride. We suspect that a house payment was due. Or he wanted to buy a new boat.

Yes, the movies are a place to escape to find adventure, romance, laughter, tears and thrills but they are also a place to plunk down your kids for a couple hours of sweet relief. Every now and then, you'll be blessed by a Pixar or DreamWorks movie that manages to keep you entertained as well, and then there's the other stuff....

"I guarantee, if you’re a Smurf fan and you see this movie, you’ll see the Smurfs that you grew up with and you’ll see The Smurfs movie that you want," "The Smurfs" auteur Raja Gosnell ("Big Momma's House," "Scooby-Doo," "Beverly Hills Chihuahua") said on the eve of the hybrid live-action/CGI feature's release last year. And while that remains to be seen, since no one we know actually saw "The Smurfs," clearly it was the Smurfs movie for many audiences, as the picture went on to gross a whopping $563 million worldwide. Clearly nostalgia aimed at parents -- with kids that will like the picture regardless of whether they grew up with it or not -- should never be underestimated.

Talk about planning ahead. Before our megaplexes can even be graced by the currently in-production sequel to 2011 children’s flick “The Smurfs,” the film’s studio Sony is really eager to turn the epic saga of these little blue individuals into a trilogy.

Looks like some actors who should be and deserve to be doing much better things are going to buy themselves a nice vacation or perhaps put a down payment on a second or third house, as they've lined up roles in the inevitable "The Smurfs 2."
