“Don’t be surprised when [Rodger Deakins] or [Nicolas Bolduc] pops up for one of these upcoming projects,” we wrote in April. Of course we were talking about Denis Villeneuve and his two upcoming films, the crime film “Sicario” starring Emily Blunt and the sci-fi film “The Story Of Your Life” starring Amy Adams (the latter, a project Paramount bought the rights for recently at Cannes for a record $20 million).

Amy Adams Denis Villeneuve The Story Of Your Life
Director Denis Villeneuve, already acclaimed on the arthouse circuit for films like "Polytechnique" and "Incendies," firmly made a play for the big leagues last year dropping two unforgettable films on the festival circuit. There was the star studded drama "Prisoners" followed by the mind-bending "Enemy" (now playing in limited release)—both starring Jake Gyllenhaal—that confirmed that the filmmaker refused to be bound by genre and would bring a unique vision to whatever material he's working on. And for his next effort, not only does he have good stuff to work with, but one of the biggest actresses in town coming on board.

Enemy, Denis Villeneuve
A cinematic puzzle that dives deep into the realm of the subconscious, Denis Villeneuve's "Enemy" blurs reality with absurdity, surreality and sometimes, straight up WTF excursions into the strange. But his film is not coy provocation, nor does it simply circumvent traditional narrative routes as a parlor trick. Instead, across 90 tight, captivating minutes, Villeneuve takes viewers into a crumbling relationship, and the portrait of a man torn between two women, weighing responsibility against desire.

The Story Of Your Life Denis Villeneuve
While we're a little bummed the excellent "Prisoners" didn't get a little more Oscar love (it managed one nomination for Roger Deakins' excellent cinematography), the success of the film at least means more movies from Denis Villeneuve which is just fine by us. And while last month saw the helmer considering to direct the border drama "Sicario," it looks like something else has commanded his attention.
