One of the enduring legacies thus far for Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" has been chatter about his plans to prepare an extended version of the movie. Word of it first cropped up last summer when Oscar-nominated cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki revealed, "The first cut was 8 hours long. Terry is working on/preparing a 6 hours long version of the movie." The phantom longer version gained more steam when longtime Malick editor Billy Weber said last fall, "I know Terry is doing a longer cut of 'Tree,' but we had so many scenes that were cut out that it wouldn't be that hard to put together a longer version." And well, this mysterious longer version of "The Tree Of Life" continues to crop up in conversations about the film.

The most interesting thing about watching the awards season is how the narratives slowly take shape and change over the dense, fast-moving months leading up to the Oscars. Back in the fall, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" was being tipped as the movie to beat, with Gary Oldman said to be locked in for a Best Actor nomination, if not the win. But now in January, with the Oscar nominations just a couple weeks away from being announced, 'TTSS' has effectievely been shut out, only earning a nod from the Art Directors Guild, while otherwise remaining absent.

Summit Veep Confirms Terrence Malick Had Final Cut On 'The Tree Of Life'

It seems we can't stop talking about "The Tree Of Life." Terrence Malick's film continues to unfold with each viewing, and with the passing of more time, as his work tends to do. The director is known for shooting lots of footage, and leaving much on the cutting room floor, and so it was no surprise to learn recently he had storyboarded a sequence that would have included Adam and Eve and their sons, Cain, Abel and Seth that was never used. Nor was it particularly shocking when cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezski revealed earlier this year that Malick -- always editing, ever the perfectionist -- was working on a six hour version of the movie. But over the weekend, came a curious report that suggested that Malick somehow didn't have final cut over "The Tree Of Life."

It was quite a 2011 for Terrence Malick. Not only did the director return with his long awaited, Palme d'Or winning "The Tree Of Life," he's got four films in various stages of development including the IMAX documentary "Voyage Of Time," the untitled Ben Affleck/Rachel McAdams romance and two pictures set to shoot this year, "Lawless" and "Knight Of Cups." And yet, with all that going on, people are still talking about "The Tree Of Life" (which has placed on many year end, Best Of lists) and it's not hard to see why. The ambitious film's extended creation and early life sequence is still one of the most discussed of last year, and as you might expect, there was even more that was eventually abandoned by the director in the decades long development of the project.

The annual top ten list is pretty much an exercise in futility to some degree. With a race to cram in as many movies as possible as the clock on the year winds down (and let it be said, I didn't get to see everything I would have wanted to) combined with the added duty of then ranking them, it's safe to say that in three months (not to mention three years) feelings and impressions on the movies I've seen will have changed. But in considering the list for this year, I went with the former adjective -- "feeling." Because at the end of the day, the movies that will linger with me the most, that I will want to share and encourage others to see are those that struck a deep chord that still resonated days, weeks and months later. Others are just movies that thrilled and entertained with an inventiveness and creativity unlike anything else I saw on the big screen.
