While some in The Playlist team are flagging under the onslaught of marketing for "The Tree Of Life," this is a film we've been following literally for years and while we just want the next couple of weeks to pass by quickly so we can finally see the film, we'll continue to take what we can get from it for now.

While we're as excited as anybody for Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life," even we're experiencing a bit of fatigue at this point in the run-up to the film. Fox Searchlight has done a great job getting the word about the film -- which will be hard sell to mainstream audiences -- out there, but for the past couple of weeks we've been trying to take a breather. But damn it all, if we're not back to obsessing again.

So we're a few weeks away from when the world will get their taste of Terrence Malick's highly anticipated "The Tree Of Life." Nearly every scrap of information has been pored over in the run up to the film, and while the film boasts huge talents behind the camera on the screen, composer Alexandre Desplat has been a bit left behind thus far.

Almodovar, Paolo Sorrentino, Takashi Miike, The Dardenne Brothers & Lynne Ramsay; Also In Line-Up; 'Pirates 4,' 'Kung Fu Panda 2' & 'The Beaver' To Play Out Of CompetitionThis morning brought one of the moments on the calendar that every serious film lover awaits with bated breath: the announcement of the line-up for this year's Cannes Film Festival, still the most prestigious on the circuit. Year after year, some of the world's best directors hold off to debut their new films on the Croisette, and virtually every year brings at least one stone-cold classic -- along, of course, with the famous Cannes bombs. With last year's selection generally deemed to be the weakest in a while, has this year's batch (the 64th!) turned things around? We've heard the rumors for months now, and we knew that Woody Allen's latest, "Midnight in Paris," would be opening the festival on May 11th, but little solid fact otherwise. So -- how's it looking?

A brief addendum to our piece yesterday on the story behind the surprise announcement of a U.K. release of Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" before its mooted Cannes debut -- and it's another twist in what's turned out to be one of the more interesting behind-the-scenes business stories of the year. Icon Film Distribution Ltd, who've been set to distribute the film in the U.K. for some time, announced a May 4th release at the start of the week, something firmly denied by the film's U.S. distributors Fox Searchlight, and others close to the film.

Probably the biggest controversy of the week (despite the efforts of Disney and Jennifer Garner) has come over "The Tree of Life," the latest film from Terrence Malick that has been whipping up near-religious levels of anticipation in film fans everywhere, ourselves included. The film was all-but-confirmed to be playing Cannes last week, something that's been rumored ever since Fox Searchlight announced they'd be opening it in the U.S. at the end of May. But a spanner was thrown into the works by Empire's story on Monday that Icon, the distribution company originally founded by Mel Gibson, and who have the rights to the film in a number of territories, were planning to release it in the U.K. on Wednesday May 4th -- a week before Cannes gets underway, and over three weeks before the film opens in the States.

At the rate news is building around Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" you would think it starred a masked hero in spandex. But kudos to Fox Searchlight for turning the director's cerebral film about existence, the universe and uh, dinosaurs into an event. A brand spanking new poster, two stills and two brand new sites for the film have been launched and while it hardly offers up anything particularly groundbreaking in terms of the film, it stokes the anticipation for the movie further.

Wow, this is unexpected. With Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" pretty much confirmed for the Cannes Film Festival, we figured that it would serve as the global launchpad for the film, however, it turns out that's not the case.
