While the release schedule is starting to look a little less grim over the next few months -- most upcoming weekends promise at least one picture that doesn't actively insult our intelligence, which is a start -- the wait for the May release of Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" still seems interminable. It's a picture that we've been looking forward to for the last couple of years, so you'll excuse us if we jump on to any slivers of information about the film which has largely been under wraps.

It would be safe to say that The Playlist is as sick of the just-wrapped-up awards season as anyone. The endless ceremonies, often with the same results, the blind guesses, the half-informed speculation; by the time it reaches March, we're kind of furious with the whole circus.

Also Reveals That Terrence Malick Consulted With NASA For Footage Of The CosmosWith a little more than four months to go before its release, the details about Terrence Malick’s long-awaited “The Tree of Life” are continuing to trickle out bit by bit. The film centers on a father in the 1950s (Brad Pitt) and his son Jack (Sean Penn), now grown up, in the present day as they deal with the residue of their difficult relationship. We’ve been watching that beautiful trailer more than we’d care to admit and we’re starting to feel those images burned onto our brains. The man responsible for creating those images, Emanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, (ace cinematographer for “Children Of Men”, “The New World”), spoke to the LA Times about the film, and revealed Malick's unorthodox approach to shooting the film.

That’s right, 2010 is already in our rear view and we’re looking far, far ahead into 2011. If 2010 was the year of audiences rewarding original, smart blockbusters (“Inception”) and punishing glossy, but empty big-budget tentpoles (“The Tourist,” “Tron: Legacy”) the new year will find studios hoping once again that comic franchises and sequels can bring in the big bucks. No less than five comic-book movies are on the way with “Thor,” “Captain America,” “Green Lantern,” “Green Hornet” and “X-Men: First Class” all swinging into theaters, while tried-and-true franchises get sequels with “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Transformers 3,” “The Hangover 2” and “Sherlock Holmes 2” among the films looking to bank on previous successes.

Fuck "Thor," "Cowboys & Aliens," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and whatever other geek movie trailer countdown that happened this month. This is the trailer we've been dying to see ever since it started unspooling in front of "Black Swan," and for us, if the movie news year ended right here that would be fine with us.

Also Scoring Chris Weitz's 'The Gardener'So we are just over five months away from the likely Cannes debut and theatrical release of Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life." The film, pretty much the closest thing the arthouse world will ever get to a blockbuster, stars heavyweights Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in a decades-spanning tale about a father/son relationship and also the mysteries of the universe. The trailer for the film is currently in theaters playing in front of "Black Swan" but don't expect it go online anytime soon as Fox Searchlight plans to piecemeal stills and info about the project in the run-up to the release. So with that in mind, we'll take whatever info we can and the latest bit of news comes from the film's composer, Playlist favorite Alexandre Desplat.

After what amounts to about two years of waiting or more, cinephiles are drooling in anticipation at finally receiving their first look at Terrence Malick's long-gestating drama, "The Tree Of Life" starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and they're getting it this Friday when the Fox Searchlight picture's trailer debuts before Darren Aronofsky's psycho-horror ballet, "Black Swan" (it's called corporate synergy). However, we're getting a small taste now. The L.A. Times has been given a peek at the trailer in advance and they say the footage, "exceed expectations."

It's hard to believe after such a long wait, but Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" will hit theaters in about six months. Really. And while we probably won't see a "Tree Of Life" Tuesdays marketing campaign modeled after Disney's approach to "Tron: Legacy," we won't have to wait too long to get our first look at the film.
