The first day of the San Diego Comic-Con is now in full swing, and it's starting off with a bang as the cast and filmmakers for the final chapter(s) of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" have gathered to show off some footage and do a Q&A with fans later this afternoon. How devoted are the Twihards? They've been lining up for days just to get a peek at what's to come.

So are studios now backing away from showing off their goods very early at Comic-Con? That seems to be the way the tide is shifting. Just a couple of days ago it was revealed that Warner Bros, DreamWorks, The Weinstein Company and Disney were going to be no shows this year in San Diego. While Jon Favreau will give fans "Cowboys & Aliens" a week before it hits theaters by premiering it at the geek convention, it seems studios are cooling on the idea of sneaking their movies six months or more before they hit screens. "Sucker Punch" and "Tron: Legacy" are probably the two biggest recent examples of films that got big Comic-Con hype only to fizzle or underperform at the box office (and yes, we know a sequel is in the works but you can bet Disney was expecting bigger numbers for a movie they started hustling two years before it came out). And it's not just studio honchos who are wary of questionable impact Comic-Con has on a movie.

Warner Bros, DreamWorks, Disney & The Weinstein Company Pass On San Diego; Marvel On The FenceThe comic/geek crowd are either the most important group to court for genre films or their influence is overstated; it really depends on who you ask. In recent years, the very vocal contingent has generally been thought of as essential to making sure more challenging or niche fare finds an audience or least makes its budget back, but a series of disappointments and flops have the studios reconsidering. Last year, Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" was met with widespread geek acclaim only for the Universal film to sputter at the box office (though to be fair, the marketing for that film did little to embrace anybody outside the core of fans). "Sucker Punch" got major buzz and died on the vine this past spring, while "Tron: Legacy" played modestly despite nerds flipping for footage that Disney teased as early as 2008 (though yes, it has done enough to convince the studio get a sequel moving). And both "Skyline" and "Let Me In" faltered when they hit screens later in the year, after doing the San Diego Comic-Con rounds.

Let's be honest here. The "Twilight" franchise thus far has been one long cocktease as audiences have patiently waited for Edward and Bella to stop brooding and pouting and just fuck already. Well, that day is soon upon us.

The Leftover Question Marks Of 2011 - Can These Films Possibly Be Any Good? Part 1

The Answer Is Probably Not, But Hey, What The Hell...Our exhausting coverage of the films coming out in 2011 continues and yes, we're tired, hungry and a bit cranky. We used to call this our Least Anticipated Films feature, but this year our New Year's resolution was to be a tiny bit more positive. Frankly, the sentiment applies, but this is also the leftover films of 2011 we just don't know what to do with. Many of them look abysmal, some of us glass-half-full Playlist types (yes, there are a few among us) think, "hey, that picture might not be so bad," while other members of the group stare in shock that such an idea could be possibly floated. So yes, basically these are the films that we don't hold out too much hope, the ones we think look downright cheap and dreadful, made only to turn a buck and the occasional few that look half-decent (and may just not have fit in the character count of our Escapist Features, sue us) --- though before you bombard our comments section, please actually read what we have to say about these films before assuming we're completely writing them off. Also, while it wasn't intentional, some of us do find it amusing that most of the cast of "Twilight" fill these halls. Another trend we just realized? Leighton Meester pretty much means box-office poison (poor cute, "Gossip Girl"). Also, Hollywood seems to be banking on the mostly unknown Alex Pettyfer, but he truly looks like a charisma-free zone of blandness. Onwards to 2011, though, not necessarily upwards in this case....
