With "Grown Ups 2" starring "SNL" alumnus Adam Sandler and "King of Queens" star Kevin James opening this weekend, and "The Way Way Back" with Steve Carell of "The Office" fame out since last week, your local multiplex will soon be playing a choice of films with star actors who originally made their names in TV comedy shows. All three of these guys have carved out the kind of big-screen success that means we arguably now associate them more with movies than with television, but that's a trick that many have tried and only few have really pulled off.

The Way Way Back
Back in 2012, “The Descendants” took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and most people were probably surprised to see Alexander Payne (a previous winner for “Sideways” and nominee for “Election”) flanked by Dean Pelton from “Community” and that dude from “Club Dread.” For the first time in Payne’s career he had not collaborated with his usual co-writer Jim Taylor, but instead rewritten a previously existing screenplay by the aforementioned Jim Rash and Nat Faxon (which was in itself an adaptation of a novel). Many assumed that it was Payne’s award to take home and the other two were just lucky to be standing up there. But with their directorial debut (and second screenplay) for “The Way, Way Back,” Rash and Naxon prove that it was no fluke.

The Way Way Back
“The Way, Way Back” may not be a summer blockbuster extravaganza, but it’s perfect for a summertime release. Hitting theaters this Friday on July 5th, “The Way, Way Back” is a coming-of-age tale about Duncan (Liam James), a shy teenager, and the friends he makes at the Water Wizz water park. His most fulfilling friendship comes in the form of Sam Rockwell, of course, who plays Owen the park manager. We have two clips from the movie, so journey on down and check them out.

Pacific Rim Blue Jasmine Only God Forgives The Hunt
It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through the summer, but no worries because July has fireworks, hot dogs, and movies! June was a soft month with staid comedies like “The Internship” and divisive blockbusters such as “Man of Steel” and “World War Z.” But, the next thirty days or so should have more than enough for you whether your appetite is for explosions or more subtler fare with a bit more substance.

The Way Way Back
“The Way, Way Back,” the much-ballyhooed coming-of-age water park comedy from Jim Rash (“Community,” the Oscar-winning script for Alexander Payne's “The Descendants”) and his writing and directing partner Nat Faxon, arrives the day after the 4th of July, and you had better hope your relatives have already packed up and driven back across however many states to wherever it is they spend the other 364 days of the year, because you are going to have an urgent appointment with this film.

Sometimes, a familiar story well told is more than enough, and that seems to be the case with Fox Searchlight's "The Way, Way Back." Premiering at Sundance in January where it was quickly snapped up in a big deal, our man on the ground called it "a crowd pleaser...that entertains and still has a personal stamp." And judging by the first trailer, it seems that's about spot on.

Today is April 1st. Some folks are coming down from Easter chocolate hangovers and a good chunk of the internet are trading April Fools' Day gags while Hollywood seems to be taking it a bit easy. So forgive the random mash-up of images, but that's just the way things are going today...
