For the most part, Michel Gondry's "The We And The I" has been working under a bit of secrecy, intentionally or not. Borne out of meetings with the publishers of the "You'll Like This Film Because You're In It: The Be Kind Rewind Protocol" book which is about community filmmaking, the project is one that Gondry has been developing for a while now, working with a cast of unknown kids, in a story that's very loosely about a bunch of high school stundents on the bus home on the last day of school, and how relationships change and evolve. There have been some hints at time-travel or sci-fi elements, but how those come into play is not yet known.

If we consider "The Green Hornet" as a studio "one for them" gig for the helmer, it's been nearly four years since the last bonafide Michel Gondry feature effort, "Be Kind Rewind." Thankfully, though, it looks like the inspired Frenchman has a couple of projects up his sleeve having spent last fall shooting "The We & I," a kids-inspired drama now in post-production, with another one in "Mood Indigo" (formerly known as "The Foam of Days") in the works and set to feature the powerhouse French cast of Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris, Gad Elmaleh and Léa Seydoux.

During SXSW 2010, French filmmaker Michel Gondry first revealed to us a new lo-fi and under-the-radar project he was working on called, "The We & The I."It's [about] kids on a bus...it's about the group effect, how people in groups transform when the group is dislocated," he said in somewhat convolutedly. "Because everyone jumps out of the bus at different times, there is a smaller group and how the relationships evolve."

Screenings have started for Michel Gondry's first big tentpole studio film, "The Green Hornet," and the early reactions on Twitter have been positive. Certainly, it seems to indicate that reports of Sony's pleasure with the film were on the money and if the early word continues to build in the same direction, it would be a remarkable turnaround for a film that only a few months ago had most movie sites ringings its death knell. So with that film gearing up for release next month, Gondry is already looking to what's next and he's certainly not short on options. The animated project "Megalomania" and ambitious musical project "The Return Of The Ice Kids" with Ellen Page attached have been in the works for a while, but it's another long-gestating project that will go first.
