Some interesting news cropped up yesterday morning. The new owners of Miramax struck a deal with the old owners of Miramax, the Weinsteins, to put into production sequels and or potential television offshoots for some of the most high profile titles in the film library. "Bad Santa," "Rounders" and "Shakespeare in Love" are the first batch to titles to be exhumed but plenty more are waiting in the wings including, “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “Copland,” “From Dusk Till Dawn,” “Swingers,” “Shall We Dance?,” “The Amityville Horror” and "Clerks." The news took many by surprise as pretty much no one actually involved with those films knew about any pending spinoffs or sequels until yesterday's press release. But ever quick to have his voice heard, Kevin Smith responded to questions about a potential third "Clerks."

With The Weinstein Company being handed a double dose of bad news for Oscar season with their contenders "Blue Valentine" and "The King's Speech" being handed NC-17 and R ratings, respectively (the former apparently for a scene where Ryan Gosling performs oral sex on Michelle Williams, the latter for a sequence where Colin Firth stutters a bunch of f-bombs), the indie arm isn't taking this lying down.

Weinstein Company Also Picks Up Separate Bekmambetov-Produced 'Apollo 18' Film For March 4, 2011 ReleaseFiguring out how many fingers in various pies Timur Bekmambetov has is quickly becoming a Ridley Scott-like pop-quiz that your editor might spring on you one day and you're likely to fail. The "Wanted" director is developing myriad projects, including "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (separate from the David Fincher one), a sci-fi film with "Monsters" director Gareth Edwards, and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (among many others) which is his next directorial vehicle and is already slated for a June 22, 2012 release date.
