If it felt like a forgettable and rather dead weekend at the box office, that’s because it was. Studios typically don’t release major films in theaters the weekend of the Academy Awards, the conventional wisdom being that everyone’s going to be watching the awards, gearing up for the awards, and or doing something that involves preparing for the ceremony and not going to movies.

When it premiered at the Venice Film Festival back in August, "The Wind Rises," which hits theaters this week, was accompanied by the announcement that it would be the last feature film from director Hayao Miyazaki. It may be that that turns out to be premature—the filmmaker has said as much several times before—but if this truly is his last film, it'll prove to be a monumental loss to cinema.

Last year's Venice Film Festival saw a number of filmmakers push outside their comfort zone. Alfonso Cuarón made a 3D blockbuster set entirely in zero gravity. Kelly Reichardt made a thriller. Stephen Frears made a good movie. But no departure has been greater from a filmmaker than the one that Hayao Miyazaki takes with "The Wind Rises." The 72-year-old Studio Ghibli mastermind has made his name with fantastical fables from "Laputa: Castle In The Sky," through his mainstream breakthrough in the West with "Princess Mononoke" and the Oscar-nominated "Spirited Away" to his most recent picture, "Ponyo." But he's never directed a film like "The Wind Rises," a biographical period drama that has a few flights of fancy, but is otherwise a grounded and very personal tale of aircraft design, the oncoming storm, and doomed love. And yet, it's a film that wouldn't work in any medium but animation.

While certainly not without its problems, “Don Jon” proved a major effort from its director and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt this year, first gaining acclaim at Sundance before making its way to theatres in September. His directing skills were the main takeaway from the experience though, and they haven’t gone unnoticed: news comes today that Levitt may be attached to a considerable leap in material for his sophomore feature, and also that he’s to lead the U.S. cast in the final film from the master of Japanese animation.

First! Once again, the New York Film Critics Circle made filmmakers and studios sweat to get their films screened in time as they position themselves to be the first (official) word on the awards race and augur of things to come ... at least until the National Board Of Review weighs in tomorrow. But for now, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is the one to beat over the next couple of months.

With the Thanksgiving break now officially over, and only three short weeks until Christmas, it seems Hollywood isn't wasting one hot second when it comes to nominations and awards. And so it continues with yet another branch of industry types getting to together to honor the best of the best, and this time, it's the folks in animation.

Considered a strong contender not only for a nomination but also a possible win — particularly considering it's Hayao Miyazaki's final directorial effort — "The Wind Rises" may have a more difficult hill to climb than easier to swallow fare like Disney's upcoming "Frozen." But considering the animated studio has the best of both worlds by distributing the two movies, they should be happy no matter what happens as both are seen as shoo-ins for nods.

The last week or so has seen the animation branch of the Academy start to crystallize their contenders: a list of 19 features have been announced as the submitted films for the Best Animated Feature category, along with a list of 10 shorts. This year sees a fairly major change in the category, with voters on the nominating committee now able to watch the films on screeners, rather than attending special in-theater screenings. They also only have to watch two-thirds of the eligible films (twelve and a half, which we're assuming rounds up to thirteen), rather than the 80% which was the case in previous years.
