The World’s End
And so it ends, and we're not just talking about the end of the world. Edgar Wright and his longtime friends and collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are finally putting the capper on their fabled, informally known Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. Starting with "Shaun Of The Dead" and continued with "Hot Fuzz," each film saw them take on a genre (zombie movies, buddy cop flicks) and turn them on its head, to thrilling and very, very funny results. And now it's all coming to a conclusion with "The World's End."

The World’s End
Edgar Wright’s loose “Cornetto” trilogy is coming to an end. In a recent CapeTown Film Fest conversation (can someone please explain what “CapeTown” means? Is that code for nerd gathering?), Wright explained the origin of the ice cream jokes in his trilogy while discussing his latest film in the triptych, “The World’s End.”

Something must be in the water (maybe it was the approaching Mayan apocalypse, which never happened), because end-of-the-world comedies are very much in vogue in 2013. There's Anna Kendrick and John Francis Daley in "Rapturepalooza," Seth Rogen and co in "The End Of The World," and indie "It's A Disaster," but certainly our most anticipated of all of them is "The World's End," the film which marks the third in the so-called Cornetto trilogy, written by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, directed by the former, and starring the latter alongside Nick Frost.

Everybody's talking about Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" test footage, shot last year for Marvel, unveiled at Comic-Con and then recently leaked online. It was swiftly taken down by Marvel lawyers of course, but those who got to peek at the brief footage were able to witness something that looks beyond promising. But Wright's got bigger fish to fry than a movie that won't arrive in theaters until 2015: namely his upcoming feature "The World's End." Perhaps attesting to Wright's speed -- it was shot last September -- the film appears to be already complete and its U.S. date has been moved up two months, with the stem to stern of the picture arriving in under just 12 months.

It seems that, at least on the big screen, the end of the world just isn't worth it without your friends. Last year we saw a bit of that in "Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World," while the Apatow gang will push that notion further this summer with "This Is The End." And this fall, Edgar Wright will round up the boys for a pint in "The World's End," and some new images are here to give you a sneak peek.

Here's what we know so far about Edgar Wright's "The World's End": it's the final chapter of the Cornetto Trilogy. It stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman and Eddie Marsan. And the story involves friends who reunite after twenty years to go on an epic pub crawl, only for the fate of humankind to somehow cross their paths. And with production currently underway, a few more intriguing morsels about the film have emerged.

It has been five (far too long) years since Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost all got together and delivered the excellent "Hot Fuzz." But patience will be rewarded in 2013 when the trio reunite for the final film in their Cornetto Trilogy, and they're taking the world with them.

Here's a fun fact: Peter Jackson had an ever so brief cameo in Edgar Wright's "Hot Fuzz" (so did Cate Blanchett, for the record). You know who else did? His future Bilbo Baggins, and now that actor will be taking in a role in "The World's End." So, small world right?

Of all the many pleasure of "Hot Fuzz," one of the greatest were the two Andys -- DS Andy Cartwright and DS Andy Wainwright, the moustached, macho cops who are the nemeses, and eventually allies, of Simon Pegg's Nicholas Angel. A crude, childish and thickly accented double act, they were brought to life by two scene-stealing performances by then-unknown Rafe Spall (who's a fast-rising star these days, with roles in "Prometheus," "Life Of Pi" and his own lead in "I Give It A Year"), and the great Paddy Considine, an actor generally better known for more serious fare in films like "Dead Man's Shoes," "In America" and "The Bourne Ultimatum."

It’s been a long time coming but next year finally sees director Edgar Wright and co-writer/star Simon Pegg close out their unofficial “Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy, which began with “Shaun of the Dead” and was followed up by “Hot Fuzz,” with "The World's End." With filming set to start this September, Rosamund Pike (“Wrath of the Titans” and “An Education”) has been added to the film.
