In one week, the Venice Film Festival will kick off the fall festival season, and among the may buzzy titles making their premiere is one that, as of yet, hasn't book a stateside date: Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem." The director's latest offering, an ambitious sci-fi effort in the spiritual vein of "Brazil," brings together a star-laden cast — Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Melanie Thierry, Ben Whishaw, David Thewlis, Matt Damon, Peter Stormare — to tell the story of an eccentric and reclusive computer genius, plagued with existential angst, who is working on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence, only to be continually diverted and interrupted by The Management.

The saga of the unmade, on-again, off-again "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" could be a movie unto itself. And actually, it is, with the documentary "Lost In La Macha" capturing Terry Gilliam's first failed/cursed attempt to bring the Tony Grisoni-penned picture to the big screen. And since then, the movie has moved in fits and starts, with money sometimes coming together only to fall apart, as cast members such as Ewan McGregor, Robert Duvall and the long attached Johnny Depp (who is now working on his own 'Quixote' movie at Disney) have come and gone. But the filmmaker has pursued and completed other projects, including the forthcoming "The Zero Theorem" which is gearing up to make its debut in Venice in just a couple of weeks. However, it appears 'Quixote' nearly happened, again.

After a weighty first announcement for this year's TIFF earlier in the week, eyes turned across the Atlantic this morning to the reveal of the line-up for the 70th Venice Film Festival, which precedes Toronto by about a week. We already knew the festival was opening with Alfonso Cuaron's hotly-anticipated 3D space adventure "Gravity," and an educated guess at the line-up could be made from looking at which films among the TIFF announcement weren't world premieres, but the official roster was revealed at a press conference in Rome this morning, and it's once more, a doozy.

Summer blockbuster season is now on the downward slope, and the festival season is on the horizon and we've already started getting ready for what will be an onslaught of eagerly anticipated films. Just last month, we laid out our predictions for the Venice Film Festival ahead of the formal announcement coming from organizers this month. But it looks like we locked down at least one movie that was already considered a strong contender to appear.

Well, watch this while you can because it will probably be yanked off the Internet in short order. But for the past few weeks, some footage of Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem" -- including a rather spoiler heavy reel featuring 12 minutes of material -- have been kicking around some parts of the interwebs, but over the weekend they made their way to some forums and YouTube, and thus here we are.

There’s no doubt Terry Gilliam is one of the chattiest directors out there, and his disdain for mindless popular entertainment is well-documented. During a sit-down interview at Entertainment Weekly’s first ever CapeTown Film Fest, the director answered questions about his career, popular culture, and everything in between.

Hey wait, didn't this wrap already? With lensing taking place this fall on Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem," and the movie in post-production, you might think it's a matter of putting completed pieces together now, but it seems there are still a couple of things to finish up. The movie has already been operating with a bit of mystery around it, and now here comes another piece of puzzle: it seems there is a role up for grabs and Gilliam wants Bill Murray for it.

The last year to year and a half or so have been very good to Ben Whishaw. The rising British actor features in two of this fall's biggest films -- The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas" and that latest 007 flick "Skyfall" -- and Steven Spielberg wants the actor for his next blockbuster, "Robopocalypse." Before he gets to that though, Whishaw will making a quick pit stop to the set of a film by another acclaimed director.

The last time Matt Damon and Terry Gilliam worked together, the results weren't so hot. "The Brothers Grimm" was promising on paper, but a bit of mess in execution, a situation only exacerbated by Harvey Weinstein, who famously meddled with Gilliam and disagreed with his approach on the movie. The result? A product that felt compromised when it was released and one that the director lamented. But either way, it seems everyone enjoyed their experience. Damon's 'Grimm' co-star Heath Ledger reteamed with Gilliam for "The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus" before tragically passing in the midst of production, and now Damon will lend a helping hand to "The Zero Theorem."
