Divergent
The cornerstone of young adult fiction is its exploration of personal, emotional issues through the filter of ridiculously high stakes, not the least of which because teenagers equate their feelings with the center of the universe. But when film adaptations of that material build real universes to physically embody those issues, the results are decidedly mixed, exemplified by Neil Burger’s realization of “Divergent.”

Divergent
Quick, name a modern YA franchise that has succeeded since the "Twilight" juggernaut stormed into theaters and forced every scared-stiff, looking-over-their-shoulder studio exec to scramble for his/her own would-be moneymaking property? For every 'Hunger Games,' that has triumphed, there has been a "Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones," (initially shuttered, but limping back for a sequel), "Beautiful Creatures" (dead on arrival), "The Host" (a laughable worst-of-year dud), "The Seventh Son" (delayed by more than two years) and the Weinstein Company's "Vampire Academy" looks as if it was concocted by Friedberg and Seltzer.

Developing for nearly a decade, the adaptation of Deborah Moggach's "Tulip Fever"has seen all kinds of names — John Madden, Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Peter Chelsom, Tom Hooper — kick the tires, but nothing coalesced. But earlier this year the wheels started spinning again with Alicia Vikander became attached, and now she may be joined by Dane DeHaan.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, JAMIE DORNAN
Over the weekend the highly anticipated, big screen adaptation of your Aunt's favorite piece of erotica, "Fifty Shades Of Grey," hit a major bump in the road. Charlie Hunnam, slated to play Christian Grey, suddenly dropped out of the movie, citing an "immersive TV schedule" that wouldn't let him adequately prepare for the part. Immediately, suspicion was cast on the studio sanctioned reasoning—surely he was aware of his TV schedule? what kind of deep preparation does anyone need for this movie?—and naturally, today comes further rumors.

Willem Dafoe is now joining the diverse ranks of Bill Hader, David Bowie, Guy Pearce, Jared Harris and Crispin Glover in donning the platinum wig to play pop art icon Andy Warhol. The actor has joined French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello's "Saint Laurent," a biopic about the famed fashion designer. Not to be confused with The Weinstein Company movie also in production, this much starrier endeavor features Gaspard Ulliel in the title role, with Olga Kurylenko, Jérémie Renier, Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Amira Casar in support. Cameras are rolling on the film which is already slated for a May 14, 2014 release in France. Can you say Cannes?

Shailene Woodley, Divergent
So Shailene Woodley, who will no longer appear in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and is reportedly being replaced in part 3 all together, got kicked in the teeth today, right? That and the fact that there were those vile comic book nerd posts a while back questioning her attractiveness (like those guys wouldn't dream to sit next to her, let alone date her). Meh, not so much. In fact, it's kind of been her day. She showed up in the trailer for "The Spectacular Now," this morning, one of Sundance 2013's biggest hits and now new images of "Divergent" have been released. What's "Divergent"? Well, a sci-fi-ish young adult movie adaptation that looks like it's going to be as popular as "The Hunger Games" if audience fan buzz is any indication.

While Jeremy Irvine, Lucas Till and Alex Pettyfer were testing for the coveted (?) male lead in "Divergent," and certainly have more name recognition than the eventual winner, it seems their talents didn't quite match what the filmmakers were looking for. Instead, rising Brit actor Theo James has gotten the gig, in what he likely hopes will be a push into the stateside scene.
