We're getting down to the last couple months of the moviegoing season, and as yet there are only a small handful of movies left to be seen that are also considered Oscar contenders. But thanks to the For Your Consideration campaigns, you can have a chance to read a couple of the year end's biggest movies, before you see it.

"It's long," Leslie Mann told Collider this summer about "This Is 40." "The first cut was really long, but now he's gotten it down to I think... two [hours] and change? But it's worth it, you want it to be that long." Now it seems the "change" for Judd Apatow's latest has added up.

Most of the big fall pictures we've looked at the potential pros and cons of so far have been more serious in nature -- unsurprising, considering that films at this time of year tend to be targeting the Oscars. Sure, there's the light-hearted animation "Wreck-It Ralph," but we've also had "Lincoln," "Skyfall," "Flight," "Django Unchained," and "Les Miserables," most of which are likely to be relatively light on laughs (though will probably turn out to be funnier than some of the upcoming so-called comedies like "Playing For Keeps" and "Parental Guidance").

The summer movie seasons is pretty much wrapped up, with the Venice Film Festival kicking off this week, and Telluride and Toronto just around the corner. And as ever, the fall festival season sees us move away from superheroes and the like for a few blessed months, in favor of some fare that's a little more adult, and geared with an eye towards awards.

A handful of new pics from upcoming films has landed in the pages of Entertainment Weekly over the past few weeks. We've rounded up some of them here for your viewing pleasure. First up is "This Is 40," Judd Apatow's quasi-sequel to "Knocked Up," starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann alongside Apatow and Mann's real-life kids. Apatow has been veering more towards drama lately, and this looks like another step in that direction, with the pic centering on Mann's Debbie as she turns 40 and finds renewed energy to raise her kids right, fix the problems in her relationship and remain fit and attractive. The trailer was very promising, and the December 21st release is surely a sign of studio confidence.

It's spinoff/sidequel week over at Universal. With "The Bourne Legacy" hitting theaters on Friday, the studio will be using the opportunity to get audiences ready for another film that will be taking some old characters, adding some new ones, and putting them in a fresh movie to create something new.

When Judd Apatow's "This Is 40" was first announced, it was described as not a sequel to "Knocked Up" by Universal even though the film is clearly a look at the lives of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) a few years after the events of that film. Now the new poster (like the recent trailer) plays with that tag describing the film as the "sort-of sequel to 'Knocked Up'. " Nice wink at that original claim, Uni.

This is 38? Middle age comes crashing down hard in "This Is 40," the sort-of-sequel to "Knocked Up," and the first trailer is here to give us a taste of Judd Apatow's latest turn behind the camera, one that finds him once again stretching into dramatic territory while still bringing his trademark laughs, driven by life's uncomfortable, real moments.
