This Is The End, Hill, Rihanna
The end is nigh. To think it all started in 2007 as "Jay And Seth Versus The Apocalypse" a short YouTube clip starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel as themselves if they were degenerate roommates living in squalor during the apocalypse. This of course evolved into what's now known as "This Is The End," an ensemble apocalypse comedy that's expanded to also include friends-playing-themselves like James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson.

This Is The End
Is it some reflection on contemporary culture that “apocalypse comedy” is a genre now? Is this, in itself, a sign of the end of the world? We had “Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World” last year, amid the 2012 hullabaloo, and Edgar Wright's “The World's End” is incoming along with “This Is The End,” the upcoming apo-comedy coming from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in which Rogen and a bunch of his friends – James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel and Craig Robinson, along with a huge number of other cameo-ing celebs – play themselves as the end times begin to unfold during a party at Franco's.

This Is The End
While Jonah Hill and James Franco have each earned Oscar nominations, with Danny McBride finding roles both dramatic and comedic on the small and big screen, Jay Baruchel showing new shades on the stage and Craig Robinson adding textures to his comic persona, it's really been Seth Rogen who has more or less continued to play a version of himself since day one. Even in parts that potentially stretched his skills in "Green Hornet" and "50/50," the affable goofball with a predilection for weed was never too far away. And so, perhaps it only makes sense that he would co-write and co-direct (with Evan Goldberg) as well as co-star in "This Is The End," which requires nothing more than everyone involved offering riffs on their established personas. It's certainly not rocket science, but your mileage with the movie will depend on how much you like these guys to begin with, because even if you're a fan, the one joke premise has a hard time sustaining a full length movie.

This Is The End
It's either some brass balls or just a flat out bad decision, but with Sony positioning Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's let's-make-a-movie-with-our-friends effort "This Is The End" for the same weekend on "Man Of Steel," they are essentially hoping that many folks will forgo Superman or some dumb laughs. Granted, it drops on the Wednesday so the comedy will a slight head start, but will it build enough steam to make a decent counter-programming choice?

This Is The End, Seth Rogen, James Franco
While the National Association Of Theater Owners has restoked the debate over the length and content of movie trailers, frankly we could do without the deluge of movie character posters. It seems like an unnecessary marketing step solely designed to spend budget dollars, and fill whatever vacant space on the buzzmeter is left around a given movie. And yet, here we are posting them so I suppose that's part of the problem too.

Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and Seth Rogen in This Is the End
Upon viewing the abundance of “This is the End” clips and trailers that are available online, one thing is for certain: these guys had a lot of fun making this movie. You’ve got James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, etc. all getting to play fictionalized versions of themselves in an apocalyptic comedy co-directed by Rogen (alongside Evan Goldberg). Sounds like a grand old time. But will us average movie-going folk enjoy it half as much as they will? That’s the question.

This Is The End, Seth Rogen, James Franco
Just as we were beginning to tire of all of these Kickstarter campaign stories from the trendsetting uber-successful “Veronica Mars” to the backlash-ridden Zach Braff project to a second "Friday Night Lights" (yes, a movie of a TV show of a movie), James Franco and Seth Rogen throw us for a loop. While promoting their upcoming meta-apocalyptic comedy “This Is The End,” Complex asked them about the possibility of a “Freaks and Geeks” movie, referencing the “Veronica Mars” campaign.

The Playlist's Most Anticipated Blockbusters Of The 2013 Summer Season
Ah, summer. That time of year marked by long days, short skirts, and the application of sunscreen. It’s the season where even the most hardened cineaste can put aside their Criterion Collection discs, if only for a moment, and get excited about the jazzy, visual effects-driven blockbusters coming down the pike. The line between “summer” and “any other time of the year,” in terms of movies, keeps getting blurrier and blurrier, with big-budget studio fare like “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “Oblivion” coming out in the spring (we had a Michael Bay movie open in April, for crying out loud – before this it was questionable whether or not he even existed outside of June or July).
