Hell Baby
There’s barely a movie inside of “Hell Baby,” the directorial debut of Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant. In some ways, this feels like a relief: the two comedians, best known for “Reno 911,” have developed a reputation at the studios as script doctors for hire, though one look at the final products (“Night At The Museum,” “Herbie: Fully Loaded”) suggests a fidelity to structure and propriety, and only the illusion of laughs. Maybe a shucking of structure was all that was needed: “Hell Baby” seems to prove that their previous screenwriting gigs were acts of condescension at heart, and that these guys couldn’t have a stronger disdain for moving a plot forward.

Screenwriting duo and comedy mainstays Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon have increasingly become Hollywood's box office saviors, supplying the scripts for both “Night at the Museum” films as well as “The Pacifier,” and their success has allowed them a “one-for-them, one-for-us” status among the studios. Their more personal work has seen less fanfare however, ranging from the executive-mangled (“Let's Go To Prison”) to holistically mangled (“Reno 911: Miami”), but news arrives today that both men have decided to use their clout on their first co-directorial effort.

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Season of the Witch," "Drive Angry," "Seeking Justice," "Trespass," "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance." Is that it? Is Nicolas Cage finally done paying that tax bill? Can he go back to making interesting movies in-between the action pay-days again? Sadly, we doubt it, but here's a project that should make Cage a chunk of change without having to lift a finger.

In the opening pages for the writing team consisting of Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon's recent book "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit," the pair behind "Night at the Museum" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded" talk about how to properly pitch to major studios like DreamWorks and Disney. While they go more in-depth on the subject later, they establish that there's a big difference between high-concept films, and those with a much simpler story. According to them, making the high-concept stuff seem simple is key to having your movie made.

"'The Bourne Identity' but with a leprechaun." So goes the logline for "The Wee McGinty," a script from Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin. Summit Entertainment saw enough in the script to make the purchase, but apparently they've decided it just doesn't suck enough to get made, and so Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have come aboard for a re-write, with Garant slated as director and Lennon up for a supporting role.
