Far be it from us to snark about "Thor: The Dark World" as people seem to like it and plans are already underway for "Thor 3." But even for those who like the franchise, be honest—it's still third string in the current Marvel universe behind "The Avengers" and "Captain America," right? It is a little goofy, too, and Screen Junkies have detailed just how silly Thor can get.

Thor: The Dark World
While Marvel is starting to branch out their cinematic universe with "Guardians Of The Galaxy" this summer, and "Ant-Man" in 2015, that doesn't mean they're abandoning the staples. Earlier this week, the ball got rolling on "Captain America 3" with directors Anthony and Joe Russo tapped to return, and that's not all the news Marvel had.

Anthony & Joe Russo, Captain America 3
We bet even directors Anthony and Joe Russo, back in their "Welcome To Collinwood" days (see above), couldn't have imagined that a decade later, they'd be behind the camera of the one of the biggest franchises going. Yup, the pair are delivering "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" to cinemas this spring, and clearly, Marvel like what they've done with their first tentpole because they want more.

Welcome to 2014, and the more things change, the more they stay the same. In fact, our first post of year was the latest tease from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," and considering some of the top grossing movies of 2013 were franchises and comic movies, it's not a surprise that today brings with it even more superhero news.

Iron Man 3
With the clock ticking on 2013, you might be finalizing your list of resolutions before heading out to celebrate the New Year. But in Hollywood, you can bet that studio executives are looking at the year that was, and hoping to do more of the same in the years ahead. Much more.

Exceeding already great expectations as the highly-anticipated sequel to "The Hunger Games" (which opened with $152.5 million), "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" made a jaw-dropping, predecessor-surpassing $161.1 million (already making back its reported $130 million budget domestically) and averaged $38,704 per theater.

Thor: The Dark World
In its second weekend, "Thor: The Dark World" held onto the top spot with $38.4 million. Domestically, the movie is nearing the $150 million mark with a running total of $147 million. Internationally, it's already crossed the $450 million mark, with a running total of $479.8 million, and has surpassed the entire theatrical run of its predecessor, "Thor," which made $449.3 million. In spite of possible bad word-of-mouth once people actually saw it (our own review called it "the most deeply flawed Marvel movie since 'Iron Man 2' "), 'Thor 2' suffered only a 55% drop in its second weekend (compared to the 58% drop "Iron Man 3" felt from opening to second weekend).

Thor 2: Dark World, Post Mortem
After rolling out first in the rest of the world, this past weekend saw the U.S. release of "Thor: The Dark World," the third adventure to feature the Norse god of thunder, after "Thor" and "The Avengers," and the eighth movie in Marvel's cinematic masterplan. As you might have assumed, the movie's a massive hit: an $86 million opening weekend, to add to the $240 million it's already taken abroad.

Thor: The Dark World
This weekend, Marvel's hammer came down and "Thor: The Dark World" was a smash at the box office with an estimated domestic total of $86.1 million, making it the largest opening of the year so far after "Iron Man 3" ($174.1 million), "Man of Steel" ($116.6 million) and "Fast and Furious 6" ($97.4 million). Internationally, the film has already raked in $327 million (having been released in select international markets last weekend), making back its budget of $170 million and then some.

Thor: The Dark World
The first "Thor" movie was something of a risk for Marvel. Wisecracking Robert Downey Jr. in a (relatively) grounded real world setting was one thing, but a Viking god from space, played by a complete unknown and directed by a man best known for Shakespeare adaptations was quite another. But the 2011 film, while flawed in many ways, proved surprisingly entertaining and teed up both its title character and his villainous brother Loki for a return appearance in the team-up movie "The Avengers," which turned out to be an absolute megahit. As such, the studio must be feeling on surer ground with "Thor: The Dark World."
