When you sign up for a Marvel movie, any precious notions you have about creative autonomy basically go out the window. Whether you're the director, an actor, an electrician or the guy who makes sure Samuel L. Jackson gets his cronuts, everyone is there to serve the Marvel universe and its fans. No more, no less. And while it's fun to think about [insert favorite auteur] getting a chance to make an R-rated movie about [insert gritty hero that no has heard of], it will basically never happen. But if you can give into that spirit of collaborative creation, then you'll probably be cool with someone stepping in to help on your movie.

Don't worry, comic nerds. While the next few months may be filled with movies that lean more heavily on themes and characters and awards season-type subject matter, you'll still have your comic book panel-driven kicks catered to. Marvel will be swinging hard in a few months with "Thor: The Dark World" and a batch of new pics and a new featurette have arrived for the film.

Disney's D23 expo -- the Mouse House's equivalent to San Diego Comic-Con -- came and went this past weekend, bringing much of the world's manchild population to Anaheim for several days of Disney-related fun. Given the studio's increasing dominance of the tentpole field thanks to their acquisition of Marvel and Lucasfilm, hopes were high that some hot news might drop, but outside of some casting for some Pixar movies, it didn't really happen.

Thor: The Dark World
While "Thor" was initially perceived as potentially the goofiest possibility in the Marvel universe, the studio quickly made it clear that theirs was a grounded hero, with mythological family issues and galactic romance for an Earthbound woman. And when titling the sequel, "Thor: The Dark World," it's clear that things are going to get both bigger and badder with the second standalone movie. But how does it play out?

You know you're dealing with the obsessive, knotty world of comic book movies when merely announcing the title of a movie can send a legion of dedicated super-fans into a speculative frenzy. This was the case when Marvel unveiled the subtitle for their highly anticipated sequel to last year's "The Avengers," titled "The Avengers: Age of Ultron." (For those without a basement full of long boxes, Ultron was a robot menace that turned out to be one of the team's deadliest foes.) While the movie isn't going to be released until the summer of 2015, details have started to emerge about what to expect from the sequel, with handsome dandy Tom Hiddleston confirming that his fanciful Loki will not be the villain for a second (third, if you count "Thor") time, Edgar Wright clarifying the film's connection to his own "Ant-Man" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" writer/director Joss Whedon offering further tidbits (including stuff about Thanos and The Vision).

And with "Thor: The Dark World" and "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." both arriving in the coming months, comic book fans won't be left waiting long for their next dose of spandex.
