There was time when the idea of writing up a story about Anthony Hopkins being caught between two sequels would've seemed laughable. But welcome to 2012, where if you want keep the lights on and maintain some profile in Hollywood, you whore your soul to Marvel or sign up for a big franchise.

Now that Marvel is done tossing around directors for "Thor 2," choosing TV helmer Alan Taylor ("Game Of Thrones," "Mad Men") over the Christmas holiday, it seems the script is going to get worked over as well.

Looks like the offices of Marvel didn't close for Christmas. After flirting with "Game Of Thrones" director Brian Kirk and "Monster" helmer Patty Jenkins, a new director for "Thor 2" has been found. For now.

You certainly can’t accuse Stellan Skarsgård of lacking a work ethic. A regular on screens big and small in his native Sweden from the time he was a teenager, since his breakout international role in 1996’s “Breaking the Waves” he has averaged anywhere from three to eight films per year, mixing Swedish-language fare with blockbusters, voiceover work and TV appearances, to amass a fairly epic filmography.

Signing up to a Marvel movie has to be a heavy undertaking these days. Famed for being financially thrifty, creatively controlling and normally insistent on constrictive multi-film deals, the studio might have proved successful with their times at bat so far, but having already estranged Jon Favreau and Mickey Rourke, among others, the studio have now allegedly managed to alienate arguably the biggest star not named Robert Downey Jr. in their stable.

As essentially a self-financing entity, Marvel has, perhaps understandably, been careful to look after the bottom line on their self-produced movies since "Iron Man." The movies have, without exception, cost north of $100 million, but the studio has been careful to keep the money on the screen, signing relative unknowns like Chris Hemsworth, character actors like Mark Ruffalo, or rising stars like Jeremy Renner. People who won't break the bank, exactly. And those actors are kept to restrictive multiple film contracts, to the extent that Chris Evans nearly backed out of "Captain America: The First Avenger."

It looks like Marvel can't hold on to a director for "Thor 2." First, "Game Of Thrones" helmer Brian Kirk was hired and left shortly after, then a somewhat controversial choice arrived in the form of "Monster" director Patty Jenkins. A woman (gasp!) who hadn't made a feature in eight years, and who moreover didn't seem to have the kind of experience needed for a superhero movie (though the same could have been said experience-wise about Kenneth Branagh). Anyway, picky fanboys will be relieved.

So, what the fuck? Granted, Marvel's choices for directors can often be surprising -- Ang Lee? Kenneth Branagh? -- but for the most part they usually see something in the helmers that others don't. While earlier this summer, "Game Of Thrones" and "Boardwalk Empire" helmer Brian Kirk was being tossed around as a candidate, word today has another name -- one we haven't heard in a loooong time -- as the front runner for the job.

Over the years, Marvel has attracted a pretty decent roster of filmmakers to take on their comic franchises with folks like Jon Favreau, Louis Leterrier, Matthew Vaughn, Joe Johnston and more recently Joss Whedon and Shane Black getting behind the camera. However, Marvel is also known for being very...careful with money...and with Kenneth Branagh moving on from the "Thor" franchise they've decided to save a few bucks on his replacement.
