While every comic franchise this summer continues to bait fans with slightly different variations of marketing material (we're looking at you, "X-Men: First Class") Marvel has delightfully taken a full left turn from the playbook for a pretty cute new television spot.

Great Odin's Raven! Early Reviews Suggest 'Thor' Is Actually Kind Of Decent

The summer of superheroes is about to kick off, and it's only a matter of days until the world gets its first look at "Thor," Marvel's latest piece of an insanely ambitious five-film plan building towards next summer's team-up movie, "The Avengers." And for some time, it looked like the film had an uphill battle ahead of it -- last year's "Iron Man 2" was, at best, a disappointment, and early looks at "Thor" had veered from the underwhelming to the silly. But ahead of its release in some parts of the world next week, and the States on May 6th, the film has now screened, with the world premiere taking place in Sydney last night, and critics there, as well as in London, where the film unspooled last week, and L.A, where a very select group of geek press were shown the picture, have weighed in. So, what's the word?

Okay, look, we still got some issues with "Thor." The costumes and set design, at least in Asgard, look ridiculous and director Kenneth Branagh still hasn't met a tripod he liked. Overall, tone-wise the last trailer didn't know if it was intentionally campy or not, and sometimes seemed like it was trying to be both. So if this is going to work at all, it'll be up to the cast to find that balance, and a new clip from the film seems to show just that.

Here's another quick round up of the latest posters from a handful of movies due out in the next couple of months. Summer movie season will be here before you know it and that means the pre-summer movies will start rolling out in April. (We can't believe it either.) That means lots and lots of poster debuts for the various franchises, sequels and spinoffs coming over the next 6 months.

We sat down with "Kill The Irishman" star Ray Stevenson yesterday, and while we discussed the upcoming Jonathan Hensleigh thriller, we also had to ask about being a cog in the mighty Marvel filmmaking machine. The once (and future?) "Punisher" has the role of Volstagg in this summer's "Thor," a hefty, bearded pugilist that brings color to the group known as the Warriors Three. But could Volstagg appear in the future?

It's currently running between "Thor" and "Green Lantern" right now as to which comic movie is going to end up being the goofiest this summer. Admittedly, both are tough stories to bring to mainstream audiences -- alien worlds, hammers, green suits, power rings -- and while treatments we've seen so far have shown evidence of unintentional camp, hopefully the overall tone of the pictures will help sell the more outlandish elements. But until then, random pics like this aren't helping the non-comic faithful.

So, will "Thor" drop a hammer of absurdity or will it manage to make something worthy out of a tough concept to bring to the screen? Hard to say, but so far, we've seen evidence of both in the trailers but we're hopeful at the very least for an entertaining ride.

Stop the presses (ok, not really). Images from two new tentpoles have arrived. One from Warner Bros.' newly titled, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" and one from Marvel Films' "Thor."

At this point in the super hero tentpole sweepstakes of 2011, Kenneth Branagh has his work cut out for him and is playing catch up. When the venerable director was first announced as the helmer for Marvel's live-action adaptation of their Asgardian hero “Thor,” many of us discerning filmgoers presumed Branagh was going to class up the joint in a big, big, way.

At this point, we're not holding out judgement on any of these kinds of films, hell, these are :30 second Super Bowl spots. The idea is definitely: have a beer, lean back and enjoy yourself, right? But, gotta say, the trailer for Kenneth Branagh's "Thor" is definitely less impressive than "Captain America," "Battle: Los Angeles" and hell, even "Transformers 3."
