Things have been quiet for director Timur Bekmambetov following last summer's "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." In the run up to the movie there was talk of a few projects including "The Current War" about Thomas Edison with Sacha Baron Cohen considering the project as well as his take on Hermann Melville's "Moby Dick" which got a fresh rewrite. But not so much since. However, the helmer is kicking off 2013 by pairing up with a filmmaker who knows a thing or two about explosions.

Review: 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Is A Surprisingly Solid Mix of History & Horror

One of the biggest question marks of the summer movie season has been "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," Timur Bekmambetov's $70 million R-rated historical mash-up that sees the sixteenth President of the United States fighting undead creatures and the evils of slavery, all at the same time (in 3D, no less). Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote the screenplay (with uncredited help from Simon Kinberg), and produced by top ghoul Tim Burton, the trailers and television spots didn't completely convey whether or not it was supposed to be funny or scary, serious or silly. It turns out that (brilliantly) -- it's both. Somehow the movie manages to be fun and tongue-in-cheek without ever seeming disrespectful. It's a winning combination of history and horror where Honest Abe is able to kick serious ass.

When Seth Grahame-Smith began to write the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” he didn’t let the epiphany of a wacky title affect his dead-serious alternate universe story -- our 16th President, leader of the people by day, and slayer of the undead at night. Though he couldn’t have expected that the premise to catch the fancy of A-List filmmaker Tim Burton, who heard the title and experienced a brief flashback.

EXCLUSIVE: While there has been much talk, a sequel to "Wanted" has been moving slowly. While the original writers were hired to pen a sequel last fall, it remained to seen how they would continue from the blood-soaked finale of the first film, a breakneck comic book actioner from director Timur Bekmambetov that grossed $341 million worldwide. With an ending featuring a bloodbath that killed the most important characters, not to mention the biggest names in the cast, a follow-up looked like a tricky proposition, but it looks like that particular story nut has been cracked.

With major tentpole films such as “World War Z” and “GI Joe: Retaliation” recently experiencing major structural changes, in both cases executed well after the majority of the film has been shot, the public awareness of just how much behind-the-scenes finagling occurs has gone up ten-fold. Constant revisions and re-edits may appear to be damaging to the final product, but in actuality they're oftentimes just another essential part of the process -- or at least Universal and Warner Bros. are hoping so, as they begin major rewrites to two scripts floating around within their gates.

Looks like "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" director Timur Bekmambetov is going from fake history to real history, lining up the decidedly non-action-y "The Current War."

2012 could be best remembered as the year when Hollywood got cold feet and backed away from its newest stars-in-the-making. To wit: While the Internet and the movie-blog industry loves Tom Hardy, the Weinstein Company knows the signal to noise ratio just doesn't match and they bumped "The Wettest County" (a prohibition drama that Hardy stars in) in the release schedule until, after "The Dark Knight Rises" (Hardy is the main villain), hoping the immense popularity of that picture will only help the awareness of the limited release drama centering on three brothers who run an illegal moonshine operation.

After being linked to the love interest role eventually won by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, little known Australian actress Robin McLeavy has now eventually joined the cast of Timur Bekmambetov's adaptation of Seth Grahame-Greene's cult favorite "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" instead in the role of the former president's mother.
