2011 hasn't been too shabby for the movies. But even in a year such as this, there's that niggling feeling of what could have been. With the process of picking a director and casting a film seemingly more public than ever, thanks to rumors leaking and trades running short-list stories, it's possible to imagine any number of alternate outcomes for many of the biggest, and best, films of the year.

It’s not a surprise to see two of the year’s mildest weekends following each other. It is, however, a bit of a departure to see them at the beginning of December. The top twenty films at the box office brought a cumulative $73.2 million, the worst weekend of 2011. That's right, even worse than last weekend which had no new wide releases. You can keep filling up the theaters with crap Hollywood, just don't expect anyone to go.

This is what I'm talking about! This is the kind of weekend we deserve in December. Some buzzed about prestige pieces, comedies for adults of the slapstick and dark variety, and one giant overstuffed blimp of star exploitation for people who don't actually like movies.

2009’s vampire tale “Let the Right One In,” an adaptation of the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, was the polar opposite of the current vampire craze, a quiet, atmospheric and beautifully shot piece of cinema. Swedish director Tomas Alfredson’s chilling take bears no resemblance to the likes of “Twilight” or “True Blood,” comparing favorably instead with cinematic classics “Rosemary’s Baby” or “The Shining.”

The spy genre, is generally speaking, a euphemism for 'action movie' -- look at the explosions, fistfights and car chases of the Bond films, of the 'Mission: Impossible' series, of the 'Bourne' franchise, none of which have much in the way of actual tradecraft. The business of being a spy is hard, boring work, made up of listening and talking and without a lot of glamor. One of the men who best understands this is novelist John Le Carré, himself a former spy, who for close to half a century has been behind some of the most acclaimed literary examples of the genre. But aside from the much-loved "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold," and the more recent "The Constant Gardener" (the latter not strictly speaking an espionage picture), his works haven't had a huge amount of success on the big screen, lacking the speedboats and fireballs of Ian Fleming or Robert Ludlum.

Take away his instantly recognizable roles in blockbuster franchises like 'Harry Potter' and Christopher Nolan's Batman, and Gary Oldman would still be treasured as a bona fide cinematic icon. Frankly, how could the 53-year-old British actor not be, considering how many iconic characters—from Sid Vicious to Beethoven, Pontius Pilate to Count Dracula—that he has distinctively co-opted and burned into our memories?

“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” is one of those highly anticipated films that feels like it's been on its way to theatres forever. With Gary Oldman’s performance being touted for Oscar, the film has already been playing in the U.K. to strong reviews and big box office. The Tomas Alfredson (“Let the Right One In”)-directed film begins its rollout December 9th, and now there’s a new clip from the film. ‘Tinker Tailor’ feels like a film that is very clip-resistant, and this one doesn’t give much away, but features some lovely cinematography, a few beautiful camera moves, and some thrillingly tense British politeness between Oldman and Colin Firth.
