This weekend, “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann’s overstuffed piñata of a literary adaptation, opens everywhere (read our review). Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the mysterious mogul Jay Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, the object of his very intense desire. Anyone who has taken a freshman literature course (um, spoiler alert?) knows that the central love story of “The Great Gatsby” doesn’t exactly end well, but even more alarming is the fact that within the career of Mr DiCaprio this seems to be what a therapist would describe as “a definite pattern.” Over the years leo has been embroiled in a quite shocking array of cinematic trysts that ended in absolute catastrophe.

This Tuesday, one of the biggest movies of all time, “Titanic,” is finally heading to blu-ray and James Cameron is hitting the press circuit for the second time this year and he’s sounding off on Kate Winslet’s complicated relationship with the blockbuster film, as well as what’s in store after “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3.”

Were Matthew McConaughey and Gwyneth Paltrow originally up for roles in James Cameron's "Titanic" as rumored over the years? Cameron ain't sayin'. However, what starts out as what seems like a kind of jokey answer appears to devolve into some semi-bitter memories of the era when everyone believed Cameron was creating a $100 million disaster (expensive for that day and age).

Consider this a matchup of brands moreso than movies. "The Hunger Games" ruled the roost for the third straight weekend, the new millennial hit beating back two 90's sensations with ease, almost suggesting a passing of the torch. Young people will always like sweeping romance and bawdy sex, but for this weekend, it was all about that popular pastime of child-on-child murder.

James Cameron is, in case it has escaped your attention, the most successful filmmaker in history. The Canadian director hadn't exactly been starved for box-office smashes early in his career, but his last two films, "Titanic" and "Avatar," have taken nearly five billion dollars between them, the number one and two hits of all time. He's also the man behind the "Terminator" franchise, helmed one of the best-liked of the "Alien" series, has become a deep-sea explorer, and, uh, gave the world flying piranhas.

Yesterday, Universal announced that they'd shifted their hopeful Tom Cruise blockbuster "Oblivion" into April, to make way for a prime, heart-of summer slot for a movie that will be twenty years old in 2013 -- a 3D re-jig of Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park," the one-time biggest hits of all time. And it's one of a wave of these stereo-ized re-releases, from last fall's surprise hit "The Lion King" and February's "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" (with the sequels planned to hit over the next five years) to next month's "Titanic 3D."

While the jury was out before James Cameron's "Avatar" opened on whether or not 3D would be a one-time novelty or a new trend, the absolutely massive success of that film meant the format was here to stay. And while we could argue about whether or not it has been used artfully or simply as way to get a few more dollars out of your wallet (in case you missed it, we discussed that in depth right here) the bottom line is that with more than 25 movies arriving his year in three dimensions, those funky glasses aren't going away anytime soon.

It's coming. One of the biggest movies of all time is getting ready to pulverize all over again as James Cameron's "Titanic" drops anchor this spring, on it's slightly revised release date of April 6th and this time, it's in 3D. Yeah, it's the same movie you know and love (*spoiler* the boat still sinks), but it's been beefed up for contemporary audiences who apparently need stuff to fly at their face to get their money's worth. We would say it's going to be an immersive experience, but that just sounds crass.

The second highest grossing movie of all time, winner of 11 Academy Awards and the movie that launched the careers of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, this is no denying that James Cameron's "Titanic" was as big as the iceberg that sunk the fabled ship. And now, on the 15th anniversay of the movie's release and the 100th anniversary of the ship's maiden (and final) voyage, "Titanic" is wading back into theaters, this time in 3D.
