For a filmmaker who’s famous for having a twenty-year gap between films, Terrence Malick has been surprisingly prolific as of late. His last film was 2011’s “The Tree Of Life” and here we are, just under two years later with another film from the reclusive director just around the corner, with more to come. It’s a little over a month until the divisive “To The Wonder” hits theatres in the U.S. (it’s already playing in the U.K.) and a new trailer has arrived online.

To The Wonder, US poster header
By this point, you probably feel as if you've seen Terrence Malick's mystical and dreamy upcoming picture, "To The Wonder." Starring Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko, along with Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem, the film has already been released in Europe, and thus you've seen myriad posters, photos, clips, teasers, trailers and behind-the-scenes footage. It's essentially about a man (Affleck) torn between two women, his new bride from Europe (Kurylenko) and his childhood flame (McAdams), and it echoes some of the autobiographical elements of Malick's life (he left one wife to live with a woman in Paris in the 1980s).

While doing so for any movie always seems like you're taking a moment best experienced in context and distorting it, to try and make clips out of a Terrence Malick film is an especially dicey prospect. His pictures, more than any other, build on cumulative power, so with those caveats in mind, a new snippet from "To The Wonder" lies below.

Even though Terrence Malick has made not talking to the press a trademark, his process is not quite as mysterious. Though he starts with a script, the director shoots for mood not narrative, and finds the film on location and in the editing suite. And as you might expect, with three pretty generous behind-the-scenes featurettes arriving for his latest "To The Wonder," you won't see him in a single frame of it.

With the U.K. release date rushing foward, and Terrence Malick's reticence to do any press ever (Kanye West has got nothing on him), the marketing team behind "To The Wonder" are doing what they can. Though the movie has a couple of gorgeous trailers, recently the plan appears to bet that images from the movie will be enough to get moviegoers to buy a ticket.

If there's anything at all to gather from these new images from Terrence Malick's "To The Wonder," it's this: love is a bummer. And indeed, nothing really ends well for Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem in the film, but at least they look pretty damn good.

It might have been a far shorter wait than we're used from Terrence Malick -- less than two years have passed since the premiere of "The Tree Of Life" -- but given that it shot over three years ago, and premiered at Venice six months back, those who weren't lucky enough to see "To The Wonder" on the festival circuit in 2012 must be getting impatient to see the latest film from the reclusive auteur.

Well, if you're going to promote a movie about a relationship that falls apart, it's probably best to market the nice stuff that happens first to at least get people to buy a ticket. And with Terrence Malick's "To The Wonder" getting ready to open in the U.K. next month, yet another one sheet has arrived for the movie, showing our lead couple in happier times.

Sometimes, as with the twenty-year span between "Days of Heaven" and "The Thin Red Line," waiting for a Terrence Malick movie can be unbearable. A little bit like waiting for Godot. And yet, suddenly, all that has changed. "The Tree Of Life" arrived in 2011 and his latest film, "To The Wonder" hit the film festival circuit in 2012. It arrives this spring in domestic theaters and to boot, Malick already has two more films in the can, one of which we might see during the 2013 fall film festival circuit if we're lucky. Presumably the filmmaker is making up for lost time.
