We're not saying that it's "The Shining" or anything, but as far as horror movies go, the original "Hellraiser" was something a little different. Some truly innovative imagery, some original mythology, and a nasty little mood. Unfortunately, the series has been dragged into the mud by a series of increasingly awful direct-to-video sequels, leaving the franchise just as tarnished as any other over-extended horror series, and culminating in the imminent "Hellraiser: Revelations," denounced by creator Clive Barker, and made essentially as a way to hold on to the rights.

"Drive Angry 3D" is everything it wants to be. And slightly more. If one wonders to what extent filmmakers have NOT been using 3D, director Patrick Lussier answers with this picture, a crazy, bad dudes-and-fast-cars camp classic in the making. Shocking, grotesque, and completely ridiculous, audiences will get what they paid for. Or at least what they sneak in for using their leftover 3D glasses from "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never." Between this and his surprisingly satisfying remake of "My Bloody Valentine," Lussier might be shaping up to be the first genuine post-millennial 3D exploitation auteur... or something.

EXCLUSIVE: Canadian horror writer/director Patrick Lussier has come a long way and worked his way up the filmmaking food chain. The 47-year-old started out as an editor, working on Wes Craven's "Scream" and "Wes Craven's New Nightmare," made the jump to features helmer with "Dracula 2000" starring Gerard Butler, and after a few years of banging out B-movie thrillers ("White Noise: The Light," "My Bloody Valentine 3D"), the director has finally made it to the top of the horror/thriller echelon with his most recent pic, "Drive Angry 3D" starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard. Arriving in theaters this weekend, the film is just the beginning of Lussier's full-on Hollywood blossoming. He's attached to the remake of two major franchises: Dimension Films' "Hellraiser" (more on that later) and "Halloween 3D" (though that one sounds like it's stalled).
