Well, if there was ever any doubt, we can say now firmly that Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal are not afraid of controversy. The director/writer pair had a certain amount of backlash from "The Hurt Locker," but nothing compared to their follow-up "Zero Dark Thirty" — willfully misread by some as being pro-torture, and well-researched to the extent that some wanted to investigate where their sources come from.

Yeah, we saw this coming.... earlier this week we posted our review of the Sundance documentary, "Battered Bastards Of Baseball," and within, our own Katie Walsh declared, "you will start fantasy casting the near-inevitable Hollywood remake of this story." And indeed some studio execs are already doing just that.

Are we finally going to see a new movie from director Todd Field? It has been a far-too-long seven years since his excellent "Little Children" and we've been waiting patiently for "The Creed Of Violence" to get moving, all the while Field has taken to directing Captain Morgan commercials and producing the brewing "Hold On To Me" with Robert Pattinson and Carey Mulligan. And now, Field is lining up another movie to direct, but one that will certainly find him courting his biggest audience yet.

Sometimes a film director's choice of side commercial gigs poses a change that edges them outside of their usual boundaries. Just look at James Gray's Citroen commercial, with Ewan McGregor playing Bourne alongside Vinessa Shaw. But “Little Children” helmer Todd Field has outdone him wholesale, with his own journey into the rum-soaked past of Captain Henry Morgan.

While it would appear that Robert Pattinson is back together -- or at least hanging out with -- Kristen Stewart (just in time for their 'Breaking Dawn' press tour, which is surely no coincidence), the actor continues to line up an impressive array of projects. And already attached to movies with Werner Herzog and David Michod, he's got another non-Hollywood filmmaker that's lining up in his schedule.

News about writer/director Todd Field generally comes in fits and stars, but when it does arrive, it's usually pretty exciting. Earlier this month, his long-developing "The Creed of Violence" got a big boost when Christian Bale stepped into the lead role, and now comes another intriguing project, although it's not one he'll direct (for now).

It's now nearly six years since we last saw a film from director Todd Field. And you would think that there wouldn't be such a gap from the filmmaker, given that his directorial debut was the Oscar-nominated "In The Bedroom" (which saw him pick up nods for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay), and his follow-up was the equally acclaimed "Little Children" (which got three Oscar noms, including another for Screenplay for Field).

We've often wondered about long absences from some of our favorite helmers, and pondered when and how they might return in our "What Happened To These Directors" pieces. While many of the talent highlighted in both our 2008 feature and the 2011 update have since gone on to make successful returns (Lynne Ramsey, Alexander Payne, among others), one of the finest American filmmakers included in both pieces remains away from the spotlight: "In The Bedroom" and "Little Children" helmer Todd Field.

Eight Academy Award nominations after your first two feature films ain’t too shabby. For an encore? Crickets. Last year we asked: where in the world is writer/director Todd Field? The actor turned filmmaker has had several projects gestating for several years, but he hasn't made a feature since 2006’s well-received "Little Children," which added three Oscar nominations to his total.

As we mentioned in a Where Have They Been? feature we ran a few months ago, dramatist Todd Field has been missing from the world of cinema since 2006's sardonic suburban drama, "Little Children."
