Top Gun
All it takes is a look at the current stats for Tom Cruise's "Edge Of Tomorrow" to understand that these days, he's a much better sell overseas than he is at home. Domestically, the sci-fi action flick has pocketed a modest $75 million after two weeks in theatres. Abroad? $219 million. To those of you who say Cruise isn't a star anymore, you're simply looking in the wrong direction. Well, perhaps a visit to the Alamo Drafthouse might remind you of the charisma and draw Cruise once had, at last stateside.

22 Jump Street
There’s been talk of a slow box-office this year. Indeed as of early June, despite big grosses for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Godzilla” and “X-Men: Days Of Future Past,” the box-office was down 12% from 2013. And it has been relatively soft: Tom Cruise’s “Edge Of Tomorrow” vehicle failed to open higher than $30 million and all of the aforementioned summer blockbusters are expected to not pass the $225 million mark at home (a relatively low performance considering the average tentpole). Could it be blockbuster fatigue has already set in? Evidence in favor of that post it this weekend’s box-office as two non-traditionally loud and epic films took off massively to make for $110 million total.

Fault in Our Stars
Opening to slightly smaller numbers than predicted, Shailene Woodley’s romantic weepie “The Fault In Our Stars” took the number one slot this weekend, perhaps proving that you don’t need science-fiction or high concept in order for a YA novel to connect with audiences. While its weekend debut was below the $50 or even $55 million some were projecting after Thurs/Friday night’s incredibly strong numbers, it’s still a terrific opening for a movie that isn’t a franchise, isn't a summer blockbuster and doesn't feature explosions and or a huge star. Woodley isn’t a quite a “star” yet, but these numbers suggest she’s surely on her way.

Tom Cruise Action Films Ranked
Every year, pretty much since the early '80s, we've been granted a cinematic occurrence so regular you can set your watch by it, and so reliable that it's oddly comforting — a new Tom Cruise movie. And 2014 is no different, with the Biggest Movie Star In The World's latest, "Edge of Tomorrow" hitting theaters this weekend. Our first-look reviewers were so split on it that we ran a point/counterpoint review of the Doug Liman movie, but since then a few more of us have seen it, and we’re overall pretty high on it.

Top Gun
This weekend will likely find Tom Cruise once again on top of the box office when his latest, and very hotly buzzed "Edge Of Tomorrow," drops into theaters (read our two reviews here). It will be another career notch in the belt for the actor who already has quite a few, but one could argue his status as blockbuster action hero may have never happened if not for "Top Gun."

Edge Of Tomorrow Doug Liman Tom Cruise
This weekend, Tom Cruise is back in theatres with the sci-fi blockbuster "Edge Of Tomorrow," one of the few summer movies not based on a toy, comic or video game (though it is based on a book). While our reviewers were split, the movie promises an intriguing premise, Cruise in action hero mode, and director Doug Liman operating at full throttle. But there was a moment just before cameras rolled, where it seemed the movie might come off the rails.

Edge Of Tomorrow
“Edge of Tomorrow,” Doug Liman's sci-fi “Groundhog Day meets D-Day...IN SPACE!” movie, is kind of a tough one: so much so that we reviewed it twice, with wildly differing results, to cover our bases. Certainly you're going to want to see it so you can decide which side you fall on, but if you're not yet convinced we've also got a bunch of promos to introduce you to the key concepts of the film.

Edge Of Tomorrow
Masks have always fascinated Tom Cruise. There are masks in "Minority Report," "Eyes Wide Shut," and "Vanilla Sky," and they serve a key purpose in all four "Mission: Impossible" movies (movies, it just so happens, that Cruise also produces). In films like "Interview with the Vampire," "Valkyrie" and "Tropic Thunder," Cruise transforms himself physically with the help of advanced prosthetics, to the point that these augmented bits become a part of him; he is the mask. It's very apparent that Tom Cruise is obsessed with the idea of being anyone but Tom Cruise. This idea reaches its logical zenith in his latest movie, the brilliant sci-fi extravaganza "Edge of Tomorrow," in which Cruise plays a man who dies on the battlefield and is instantly reborn. Every day, Cruise could be someone else. The fact that he chooses to be himself is what's really impressive.

Edge of Tomorrow
As far as summer blockbusters go, you gotta somewhat admire "Edge Of Tomorrow" for presenting audiences with a movie that takes some explaining to get the premise across. Well, Warner Bros. is doing all they can to make it clear by dropping an extended, nearly four-minute-long trailer for the sci-fi flick.

Edge Of Tomorrow, Cruise
"If you love Tom Cruise, you see him giving a genius performance, and if you hate Tom Cruise he dies like 200 times in the movie," director Doug Liman told European press earlier this month, in what must be the oddest promo quote for a summer movie you're likely to hear. But it's also true as Cruise undergoes the worst "Groundhog Day" ever in "Edge Of Tomorrow."
