Will Jack Harper fare better than "Jack Reacher"? That's the question as Tom Cruise continues his post-'Ghost Protocol' resurgence with "Oblivion" this month, getting some help in the spectacle department from "Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski. And after a series of trailers, which have actually gotten more intriguing as they've arrived, four clips are here to help you decide whether or not to purchase a ticket.

Tom Cruise, Oblivion
Whatever your feelings are about “Oblivion,” it must be nice to know it’s finally coming out in a few weeks. Doesn’t it feel like trailers for “Oblivion” have been in theaters for a long time now? Tom Cruise reminiscing about the last great Super Bowl on Earth, Morgan Freeman lighting up a cigar, telling Cruise what’s “really going on” etc. Come to think of it, are we sure the movie hasn’t been released already?

We've been over this ground before, but we'll make it brief. Once set to be directed by Steven Soderbergh, with George Clooney attached to star, the helmer bailed on Warner Bros. "The Man From From U.N.C.L.E." in the fall of 2011, after an impasse over casting (among other things). Clooney wasn't able to take the role, so the studio decided to eye someone younger (which is something they wanted all along anyway), with names like Bradley Cooper, Joel Edgerton and Ryan Gosling tossed around. Soderbergh's choices were either Michael Fassbender or Joel Kinnaman, gambles at the time, but in hindsight look pretty smart, but regardless, he moved on. About a month later, Guy Ritchie took over the project and then pretty much radio silence...until now...

We have to say, with each passing trailer, Joseph Kosinski's upcoming "Oblivion" looks better and better. What once seemed like a "Wall-E" for adults has become something of an anticipated sci-fi tentpole, boasting an intriguing concept, some pretty impressive effects and a vibe we can get down with, and this latest trailer has once again upped the ante.

Just when it looked like Tom Cruise's comeback was cemented thanks to "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," the biggest hit of his career, the actor hit another dip, with neither "Rock Of Ages" or "Jack Reacher" setting the world on fire, and the latter looks increasingly unlikely to be the franchise starter that the actor and studio Paramount hoped it would be. But Cruise was ahead of the game, heading into territory he's rarely ventured into before -- hardcore science fiction -- with a pair of original sci-fi action movies coming up.

While everyone up in Park City is working their way through indie films that are about Important Things and could be potential Oscar Winners, the studio gravy train will always be franchises, sequels, tentpoles and blockbusters. So here's some reminders of where most of the money in Hollywood is spent each year.

Long assumed the secret weapon for any big-budget film's distribution wing on account of its enormous profit, the international roll-out is one aspect that permits a second chance to disappointing domestic results. Now that the holidays have come and gone, a number of films are realizing this very fact, and at the top of the list is Paramount as they wait to see if author Lee Child's series of books continues on in film form.

'The Hobbit' what happened? You were supposed to be our hero. The “Lord Of The Rings” pictures, all released during the holiday period, had steady-to-muscular second weekend holds. But 'Hobbit,' you’re looking more like an average blockbuster, losing almost 60% of your audience. What’s going on? You were expected to dominate this frame like you did last weekend. Could it be that your mighty Cinemascore was inflated by the first-weekend Tolkien superfans? Could it be that your ad campaign simply emphasized the ties to the earlier films, implying less of an individual story and instead, “Yes, more of this”? Oh, 'Hobbit,' you’ve disappointed us greatly.

David Oyelowo Talks The '70s Influences Of 'Jack Reacher,' Says Lee Daniels' 'The Butler' Is 'Forrest Gump'-Esque

David Oyelowo is one of those actors who has had a very, very good year. He started off 2012 by being a part of George Lucas' World War II epic "Red Tails," made a splash with the Cannes debut of Lee Daniels' pulpy "The Paperboy," and is closing out the year with two high-profile performances – he can be seen briefly at the start of Steven Spielberg's beloved "Lincoln" and stars as one of the heavies in the hotly anticipated "Jack Reacher," where he stars alongside Tom Cruise in the first adaptation of Lee Child's wildly popular book series.

Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie has an Academy Award for writing "The Usual Suspects" and he’s kind of become Tom Cruise’s go-to scribe having penned “Valkyrie,” this week’s upcoming “Jack Reacher” and even tweaking several scripts that Cruise considered starring in (but not before McQuarrie tailored them for his needs). Recently he’s written “The Wolverine,” “Jack The Giant Slayer,” “All You Need Is Kill” and may even pen “Mission: Impossible 5” for Cruise ("Top Gun 2" seems dead now that Tony Scott passed away earlier this year).
