His latest film, "Rock Of Ages," was a box office disappointment, and on Friday, it emerged that Katie Holmes, his third wife, and mother of his daughter Suri, was filing for divorce. Just as things were seemingly starting to get back on track after a difficult half decade -- last year's "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" was his biggest hit ever -- it looks like the actor is hitting another rough patch.

For the past five years, Katie Holmes has been playing the role of Tom Cruise's wife,' one of the most widely sought-after parts in Hollywood. Her 5-year contract was up, and while a renewal was widely expected, negotiations appear to have fallen apart at the last minute, with Holmes, like previous incumbents Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, exiting the part at the age of 33.

Review: 'Rock of Ages' Is Anything But a Good Time

"Rock of Ages" will make you want to raise your arms...and then immediately plunge your fingers into your eyeballs for salvation (you can go back for seconds to rescue your ears). "Hairspray" helmer Adam Shankman directs this movie that will finally kill the '80s nostalgia that continues to plague us if we're lucky and will further root karaoke performances and bar jukeboxes in that hairspray-choked decade if we're not. We've had a sub-par version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" stuck in our head since we saw it, and we wouldn't wish this fate on anyone, except perhaps the development heads at Warner Bros. As much as everyone keeps trying to make Julianne Hough a star, Steve Perry she is not (though admittedly she is cuter).

Since rumors started to fly about Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, "The Master," which was said, and has now pretty much been confirmed, to be about the much-mocked religion of Scientology, there's been one question on the back of many our minds: what does Tom Cruise think about the whole thing? "The Seven Samurai" is, as we recounted not long ago, a film that has been ripped-off and remade many times before. But the most famous of them is "The Magnificent Seven," the 1960 John Sturges Western that took Akira Kurosawa's classic and moved it to the Old West, for the story of a Mexican village who hire seven gunfighters to defend them from bandits. As a remake itself, it would seem to be fair game for a new version, but while new takes on, say, "The Wild Bunch" have been discussed, there's surprisingly been little word on a potential re-do of Sturges' film, despite the high-drama premise and potential star-power it could draw.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. About two years ago, reports went around that Warner Bros. were hoping to re-team "A Few Good Men" duo Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson for "El Presidente." It was denied a couple days later, with reps saying that Cruise wasn't officially attached, but clearly the studio were interested...and they still are, as the project is now surfacing again.

The writing pair are one of the hottest hires around town, having lent their pens to two "Transformers" movies, "Star Trek" and its upcoming sequel, and they were just hired by Sony to rewrite "The Amazing Spider-man 2." Unfortunately, the only project they did for Universal was the bomb "Cowboys & Aliens" but the studio is banking that their track record will score them another winner.

It's not exactly shocking that once "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" stormed out of the gate at the box office last winter, confirming that Tom Cruise had his box office mojo back and was in full form, that Paramount wanted to stay in business with the actor. It wasn't long before word came out that the studio was already contemplating not only another adventure for Ethan Hunt, but one for Maverick as well in the shape of the long-developing "Top Gun 2." But considering 'Ghost Protocol' is the best entry in the series so far, both critically and commerically, we figured that would be the one to go first. Not so fast.
