Todd Haynes Returns To Features For 'Carol' With Cate Blanchett & Mia Wasikowska

It's been six years since "Velvet Goldmine" and "Far From Heaven" helmer Todd Haynes last had a film in theaters -- the uneven, but intermittently transcendent Bob Dylan picture "I'm Not There." Haynes has been busy in the meantime, helming the awesome, Emmy-laden miniseries "Mildred Pierce," as well as an episode of "Enlightened," but we've missed him on the big screen, and so we're excited by Screen Daily's news that Haynes will direct a new film called "Carol."

A sequel to “The Woman in Black” must seem like a wonderful idea to an accountant somewhere out there. That’s despite the first film telling a very complete story. That’s despite the movie’s source material not having a sequel. That’s despite the fact that Daniel Radcliffe director James Watkins and screenwriter Jane Goldman will not be returning. No, it’s because the first film has grossed close to $130million worldwide from an estimated $15million budget, and those are the kind of numbers that are hard for the money men to ignore.

The Brit List, an annual celebration of the best unproduced screenplays in the UK, may have followed in the footsteps of the Black List, but it doesn't necessarily mean the same guarantee of success. Compared to films like "The Social Network" and "Juno," which placed highly on the US list in past years, and went on to both critical and commercial success, UK equivalents like "The Men Who Stared At Goats" and "Nowhere Boy" turned out rather disappointingly, while the 2009 topper, "Good Luck Anthony Belcher," is still awaiting a green light.
