Reach Me
The last time Sylvester Stallone tried to take on a real dramatic role, the results were… creatively successful. He put on 40 lbs for James Mangold’s “Copland” in 1997, but reviews were semi-mixed. Mangold insists even though Stallone really delivered best intentions; he had engendered a lot of ill will with his mindless action films. “When ‘Cop Land’ came out, a lot of daggers were out for Sly,” Mangold said in 2011. “He had made a bunch of shittier moves, he’s the first to admit, that weren’t aimed for the highest result each time out.”

Though every week it seems Tom Sizemore leads enough straight-to-DVD releases for video stores (remember those?) to devote a new release wall in his honor, he still manages to sneak a theatrical appearance in occasionally. His latest, “Cellmates” may not have been the return he (or anyone) was hoping for, but after signing on to star in Peter Bogdanovich's “John Ledger,” the actor is now working multiple roles putting together a crime drama that could pull his career together.

With Wes Anderson and Noam Baumbach producing, and a top drawer cast coming together including names like Owen Wilson, Olivia Wilde, Brie Larson and Jason Schwartzmann, Peter Bogdanovich is set for a nice comeback with the upcoming screwball comedy "Squirrel To The Nuts." While that's cooking, though, the writer-director evidently has another project in the works that's a little more serious and will reunite him with a former collaborator.

Review: 'Cellmates' An Unpleasant Racial Dramedy Featuring A Fading Tom Sizemore

Movies can deliver a powerful message by humanizing what many consider to be the dregs of society, casting a light on what demons drive the darkness and bigotry in their heart. It’s the meaning of great art, finding humanity in the least-likely places. “Cellmates,” which is not great art, centers on former Ku Klux Klansman Leroy Lowe, an unpleasant, ornery man with decidedly unenlightened racial politics, as he attempts to stay true to his rotten self from behind bars. So far, so unpleasant.

Update: Deadline says Daryl Hannah is not part of this cast. Someone evidently spoke out of turn. It's been happening a lot lately.
