Monday night was the world premiere of Tony Kaye’s “Detachment” at the Tribeca Film Festival. Our heads are still buzzing from the strange and experimental film -- you can check out our review here (but this writer strong disagrees with the take). But, lost in the shuffle of “Detachment” finally reaching audiences is the fact that Kaye has another completed film on the shelf, the 2008-shot thriller, “Black Water Transit” starring Karl Urban, Laurence Fishburne, Brittany Snow, Stephen Dorff and more. The crime drama follows the divergent agendas of criminals, cops and lawyers as they collide over a shipment of illegal firearms and a double homicide. Earl Pike (Urban), a criminal, tries to get his family's illegal gun collection to a safe haven, while attempting to get his junkie son freed from prison. While 'Transit' is involved in a similar situation as David O. Russell’s “Nailed,” being from the same financiers, Kaye seems optimistic about the film seeing a release soon.

Kings Of Leon Documentary Also AddedOver a decade into his career, Tony Kaye is likely still wondering what it feels like to shoot a movie, edit it and then release it easily into theaters, no fuss no muss. "American History X" found him battling with Edward Norton over the cut of the film. He would return eight years later with "Lake Of Fire," a documentary about abortion that no one saw. Then there's the New Orleans thriller "Black Water Transit" starring Laurence Fishburne, Karl Urban and Brittany Snow that is still presumably being haggled over in the mess that David Bergstein created with Capitol Films. But last year, Kaye shot "Detachment," a drama set within the education system and lo and behold it's ready to make a premiere without any fights with his lead actor or the financiers going under leaving the film in limbo.

Filmmaker Talks Distrib Who Bailed On 'Leaves' & The Mad Genius Of Kaye's 'Detachment'One of the best films of the year is Tim Blake Nelson’s “Leaves of Grass,” now available on DVD. You may not be familiar with the picture, however — yanked from the schedule plenty of times, it completed a small theatrical run in September, the kind of treatment given to disappointing low-fi indies or schlock genre fare.
