Ridley Scott Halts Production On 'The Counselor' In Wake Of Tony Scott's Death

Today, Hollywood continues to reel from the tragic news that director Tony Scott took his own life over the weekend. While he shared collaborations with many of Hollywood's brightest talents and biggest stars, none were as close, creative or deeply meaningful as those with this brother Ridley Scott. The pair put their names behind Scott Free, a production shingle responsible for dozens of TV shows and films, allowing the brothers to develop and manage projects they were both passionate about. Tony's absence is undoubtedly a great loss, and understandably, Ridley is taking some time to grieve.

Something we've come to appreciate since the terrible news of the passing of director Tony Scott came in this morning, is that there's an argument to be made that almost any one of his films saw him at the top of his game. From debut feature "The Hunger," one of the first movies of the MTV generation, and the era-defining "Top Gun," all the way to the bold formal experimentation of his last four films (some of which, especially the highly divisive "Domino," were derided by many, but have their fervent auteurist supporters as well), his films were always technically impeccable, thrilling and instantly recognizable as a Tony Scott picture. He was the action director as auteur.

Some wrenchingly sad news coming in this morning, as it's emerged in the last few hours that filmmaker Tony Scott has taken his own life at the age of 68. Scott was the director of a string of action classics, including "Top Gun," "The Last Boy Scout," "True Romance," "Crimson Tide" "Enemy of the State" and "Unstoppable," and also was responsible for producing a wealth of other film and TV through his production company, Scott Free, which he set up with elder brother Ridley Scott, the director of "Blade Runner" and "Alien."

Vince Vaughn, action star? Uh, okay. Granted, he dabbled in the genre ("Mr. And Mrs. Smith" where he was mostly shooting quips and not bullets), and has done non-comedic parts from time to time ("Psycho," "Domestic Disturbance") but as a fully fledged lead in a Tony Scott movie? Well, we'll admit that it's inspired. And hey, if Keira Knightley can lead "Domino" then anything is possible.

Joe Carnahan To Write & Direct Remake Of 'Death Wish'

Joe Carnahan must be feeling vindicated this morning. The writer/director broke out with 2002's terrific, muscular cop thriller "Narc," but hasn't had a lot of joy since: his 2006 sub-Guy Ritchie action-comedy "Smokin' Aces" wasn't beloved by many, while a director-for-hire gig on the would-be-tentpole "The A-Team" was tepidly received by audiences and critics alike. But from that, he reteamed with star Liam Neeson for a far more personal project, the existential killer-wolf survival tale "The Grey," and was validated in a big way when the positively-received film topped the box office this weekend with a strong $20 million haul. Presumably, this has given him the cache to make something bigger and better next time around, something even dearer to his heart, like dream projects "White Jazz" or "Killing Pablo."

Forget Edward, Bella, Batman, Ethan Hunt, zombies, vampires, fairy tales or whatever other trend you might think is gaining heat, because it seems nothing is hotter right now than Abraham Lincoln. Last year, Robert Redford investigated his assassination with "The Conspirator," and in 2012 we'll have two versions of the famed president hitting screens, first in the revisionist genre tale "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" then in Steven Spielberg's prestige picture "Lincoln." But guess what history buffs, there is even more Abe on the way.

It seems that not even the Thanksgiving weekend can't stop either of the Scott brothers from attaching themselves to a project. This time around, it's Tony Scott and with comparisons being made to his previous films "Crimson Tide" and "Man On Fire," we guess we're not suprised that he's now signed on for "Narco Sub."

The honeymoon has certainly been over for 3D in 2011; U.S. audience have been staying away from the format in droves, choosing to seek out 2D screenings of blockbusters, and it all culminated in August in a goggled-clusterfuck where "Final Destination 5," "Conan," "Fright Night" and "Spy Kids 4" all cannibalized each other, while 2D pictures "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Help" dominated the box office. But Hollywood executives aren't done with wringing every penny that they can from the format. The next phase? taking proven blockbusters and giving them the headache-y, pop up book treatment.
