After years of talk, this spring it seemed like "Top Gun 2" was moving full steam ahead. "The Town" writer Peter Craig was brought on to write the script, and not long after Paramount honcho Adam Goodman said "Top Gun 2" would happen before "Mission: Impossible 5." In August, director Tony Scott and star Tom Cruise started location scouting, but then on August 20th, the helmer shocked and saddened the film community by taking his own life. So what happens with the franchise now?

It's not exactly shocking that once "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" stormed out of the gate at the box office last winter, confirming that Tom Cruise had his box office mojo back and was in full form, that Paramount wanted to stay in business with the actor. It wasn't long before word came out that the studio was already contemplating not only another adventure for Ethan Hunt, but one for Maverick as well in the shape of the long-developing "Top Gun 2." But considering 'Ghost Protocol' is the best entry in the series so far, both critically and commerically, we figured that would be the one to go first. Not so fast.

Perhaps it’s due to the financial success of the pro-military film “Act of Valor” or that after “Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol” megastar Tom Cruise has shed his years-long negative public image to become a top box office draw all over again, but something has gotten the wheels turning over at Paramount for “Top Gun 2." News on the sequel to the 1986 hit has been few and far apart, with original helmer Tony Scott confirmed to return back in October of 2010, followed by a flurry of news about a 3D revamp of the original and word of Cruise's desire for the sequel to stay true to the tone of the first movie. Then this past October word came that “X-Men: First Class” writing duo Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were going to pen the script, but what interested us about that news was that it had no mention of previous writing work done by Cruise’s go-to screenwriter for hire Christopher McQuarie. And now another writer looks to be riding into the danger zone.

With "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" only going into wide release this Wednesday after kicking things off with an IMAX only bow on December 16th, it seems Paramount and Skydance Productions (one of the major financial backers of the film) are very happy with what they are seeing at the box office right now for the movie. The film is looking poised to take the holiday box office in North America and overseas, it's also doing gangbusters business. In Australia, the film powered its way to the top of the charts and in India, the film is already hauling in four times the earnings of "Mission: Impossible 3" (though that is likely also helped by the appearance of Anil Kapoor). All told, at the end of Christmas Day, 'Ghost' is looking to take between $120-130 million. Not bad.

When a filmmaker or actor wants to revisit a franchise many years later, it’s usually done for what is (at least to them) a good reason: Bruce Willis appeared in “Live Free or Die Hard” for the money, “The Godfather Part III” was a thinly veiled attempt to get Sofia Coppola to move out of the house, and before the dawn of the 21st century, George Lucas never had the means to turn Yoda into the cracked out Pokémon he was always intended to be.

Well, this is an interesting development. Long talked about, though seeming more like a pipe dream than an actual thing, there is now real, actual movement on "Top Gun 2." Strap in folks.

The honeymoon has certainly been over for 3D in 2011; U.S. audience have been staying away from the format in droves, choosing to seek out 2D screenings of blockbusters, and it all culminated in August in a goggled-clusterfuck where "Final Destination 5," "Conan," "Fright Night" and "Spy Kids 4" all cannibalized each other, while 2D pictures "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Help" dominated the box office. But Hollywood executives aren't done with wringing every penny that they can from the format. The next phase? taking proven blockbusters and giving them the headache-y, pop up book treatment.

Director Has Round About Way Of Saying New Film Will Focus On New Generation Of Fighter PilotsYou've obviously heard the news by now. There's a "Top Gun" sequel on the way, Tony Scott, while apparently not officially signed on yet (according to a recent Deadline aside), is still very interested in reprising his role as the director — obviously he's a big part of what made the original so iconic, so you can understand why he'd want to see that through — and despite original reports, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie — who's sort of become Tom Cruise's go-to script doctor these days — says that Maverick (Cruise's role in the original), will indeed be the lead character (evidently the thought is how can you possibly make a sequel without Mav as the lead).

Are you ready America!?! Are you read for the return of Maverick!?! Well you better be because "Top Gun 2" isn't going to be some sissy way-after-fact sequel with a bunch of guys you don't know with Tom Cruise popping his head in to give a thumbs up. No siree. The Maverick himself is going to be leading the charge on this one.

Every so often, particularly every time Tom Cruise makes a film that disappoints at the box office, the rumors of a potential sequel to "Top Gun," the film that transformed Cruise from cocky teen star to a true icon, start up. 22 years on from the original, with "Knight & Day" tanking at the domestic box office over the summer, rumors began to surface over the summer and, as usual with reports on this one, we rolled our eyes a little.
