It's easy to get lost in the bombast of the blockbuster season and the allure of festivals just around the corner. But BBC2 is here to remind you they've got some tremendously promising, high calibre wares coming to a small screen near you, that might be enticing enough to skip heading the multiplex altogether. The station has dropped a trailer for their new season of original programming, and there are some highlights and first footage worth paying attention to.

In case the abundance of television news lately wasn't enough of a hint, it's pilot season which can see some interesting projects attempt to break onto the scene. One television project already fronting cameras that we're highly anticipating for next year is Jane Campion's six-part mini-series "Top Of The Lake."

As we're in the thick of the awards season, here's a gentle reminder (as if you already didn't know) that it's not really about "the best" of anything, but mostly about who has the most efficient campaign. If the right people get nominated and win along the way, that's almost a happy accident. But just as often, great, deserving films get overlooked. Let's take Jane Campion's "Bright Star" for example, an utterly gorgeous, affecting, aching film powered by a beautiful turn by Abbie Cornish, breathtaking cinematography and a tone and tenor unlike any film that year. That is received only a paltry Costume Design nomination is a crime, but at least Campion is still solidering on and her next effort sounds absolutely great.
