It takes a certain kind of person to gather up a handful of camels, head out into the middle of the Australian outback, miles from civilization, and start walking, but that's just what Robyn Davidson did and her story is chronicled in "Tracks," the latest from director John Curran (“We Don’t Live Here Anymore,” “The Painted Veil”). And with Mia Wasikowska in the lead role, perhaps it shouldn't surprise you that this is one will be worth watching.

'Tracks' Starring Mia Wasikowska & Adam Driver
“Tracks” has been a long time coming. Ever since Robyn Davidson wrote her 1979 memoir of her 1700-mile, eight-month trek across the Australian outback from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, and the book became an award-winning best-seller around the world, Hollywood has been sniffing around it. Multiple attempts to mount an adaptation have been made—Julia Roberts was attached to a version for much of the 1990s—but it finally took the producers of “The King’s Speech” and the oft-undervalued New York-born, Australian-based director John Curran (“We Don’t Live Here Anymore,” “The Painted Veil”) to get it made, with the film finally premiering at the Venice Film Festival today. And for many, it’ll have been worth the wait: it’s a very handsome film with a terrific central performance, even if it’s not quite an unqualified triumph.

Since his breakout turn on HBO's "Girls" as Lena Dunham's love interest, Adam Driver has found himself working with the Coen Brothers on "Inside Llewyn Davis," and with Steven Spielberg on "Lincoln," amounting to a pretty good year for the actor. Driver is also currently shooting rom-com "The F Word," which co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan among others, and has now lined up another project that'll see him star opposite another young talent: Mia Wasikowska.

Mia Wasikowska has signed on to star in John Curran’s (“The Painted Veil”) new indie “Tracks.” The film will tell the true story of a young woman named Robyn Davidson who traveled 1678 miles through the Australian desert in 1987. It’s an Australian production and will be based on Davidson’s memoirs of the same name, and has already secured distribution down under and in the U.K. (through Momentum Pictures)
