Today sees the release of the James McAvoy and Mark Strong-starring "Welcome To The Punch," and as you'll know if you've read our review, it's a slick, unusually ambitious, gorgeous-looking and absorbing British cops-and-robbers flick. It's also the latest film (with Danny Boyle's even better "Trance" following sharp on its heels next week) to prove that our cousins across the pond can take on the crime movie with the best of them.

Danny Boyle Says He's Done A Chronological Re-Cut Of 'Trance' For DVD, Admits He Treated Ewan McGregor Badly

For a man with so much to say behind the camera, Danny Boyle is a little less tenacious in front of it, managing to survive Jonathan Ross' ITV talk show this past weekend with a mixture of diplomacy and Olympic anecdotes. On the London 2012 opening ceremony, which (ironically) won him more popular favor than all his directorial achievements combined, he stood tactfully and perhaps tactically back from credit: “It was the ordinary people who made it, by their belief in it.” The ceremony was subject to as much political scrutiny as it was artistic, with Conservative commentators jumping on its take on British history. Ross didn’t beat about the bush, asking, “Are you a socialist?” which Boyle rebuffed, saying, “Financially, I’m very lucky… but I wouldn’t describe myself as a socialist.”

Director Danny Boyle was in a peculiar and unlikely situation with his upcoming mind-bending heist movie "Trance." He was able to see the film until months after he shot it, because the movie wrapped, with Boyle going on to work on the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He then picked up with what had been shot more than six months later. "We didn't anticipate [the advantage to editing after the fact] at the time and there's always a danger that it's not favorable," Boyle said. "We were very lucky to do it. Most filmmakers don't get a chance to put a film on ice. I was a bit concerned... but when we went to go watch the rough cut after the Olympics, it was like, weird. I couldn't remember what was coming next."

While he’s been talking up the film all over the place over the past week, Danny Boyle’s mind-fuck thriller “Trance” doesn’t arrive in theaters until next month. If you’ve already heard some of Rick Smith’s score and still need something to hold you over until April, three new clips from the film have arrived online that are sure to make the wait even more unbearable.

Last night in New York, the 92YTribeca presented a Conversation with Danny Boyle; an hour long conversation with the Academy Award-winning filmmaker (“Trainspotting,” “Slumdog Millionaire” about his career, his oeuvre, his iconic use of music in film and his upcoming mind bending art heist movie, “Trance.” Hosted by Rolling Stone’s Logan Hill, the conversation hewed closely towards Boyle’s use of music in film. From the big-beat eclecticism of “Trainspotting” (Underworld, Iggy Pop, New Order), the pacific lilt of "The Beach" (Moby, Underworld, UNKLE), the crescendoing guitars of “28 Days Later” (John Murphy as influenced by John Cage and Godspeed! You Black Emperor), the worldbeat flavor of “Slumdog Millionaire” (M.I.A. and A.R. Rahman) and more, Boyle’s always had a distinctively dynamic style of using music in his films, many of them giving them the kinetic energy that has made them so popular.

On Saturday morning at the South by Southwest Film Festival, a special retrospective of the works of chameleonic British film director Danny Boyle was presented. Moderated by craggy New York Times reporter David Carr, who spent a copious amount of time with Boyle during the extended Oscar campaign for "Slumdog Millionaire" (and remains an avid fan), the presentation also featured Rick Smith who, as one half of electronic music duo Underworld, has been working with Boyle since his landmark "Trainspotting" in 1996 and who, most recently, provided the score for Boyle's new psychedelic mind-bender "Trance," opening in April. (We've seen the movie but are under embargo, but suffice to say the filmmaker has scored once again.)

The buzz out of Austin this afternoon is Danny Boyle's SXSW Film Festival talk with the New York Times' David Carr (more on that later). The filmmaker unveiled some footage of his new mindbending heist film (which we've seen mind you, and it's very good), "Trance," starring James McAvoy and Rosario Dawson, discussed his filmmaking career and his ongoing musical collaboration with Underworld's Rick Smith.
