Disney is having a good year. Thanks to the insane success of “Frozen” and their Marvel studios wing, the studio has already crossed the $1 billion mark for 2014 and it’s not even May. Part of that success is thanks to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which spent its third week at the #1 box-office spot. Crossing the $200 million mark domestically, the film added another $26.6 million to its domestic tally (only down 36% from the previous weekend) and banked another $35.3 million overseas for $586 million total worldwide. Could it be one of Marvel's highest grossing films ever? Maybe, but it still has a ways to go to crack the top 2 ("Avengers" with 1.5 billion and "Iron Man 3" with $1.2 billion).

Cinematographers-Turned-Directors
This weekend, the Johnny Depp-starring “Transcendence” opens in all its technophobic glory, across the nation, and while the reviews, ours included, so far, have ranged from mildly poisonous to all-out toxic, the proof will as ever be in the box office pudding. But not only is it a litmus test for whether or not Depp’s star power can carry a film outside the Disney/Tim Burton blockbuster ghetto he’s painted himself into, the film is also the testing ground for the tricky horse-change pulled by its director, longtime Christopher Nolan Director of Photography (DP) Wally Pfister.

We are the company we keep, and in the case of Wally Pfister, he and his professional cronies are some of the most iconic around. As DP alongside Christopher Nolan, his outlook working with key actors promises a certain atmosphere, a unique method. So here we are: a gloomy thriller trying to ground its at-times-daffy premise, emphasis on a grieving protagonist, with supporting turns from Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy. These aren’t rumored plot details from Nolan’s “Interstellar,” however. No, in mounting his feature directorial debut, “Transcendence,” Pfister has chosen to tackle familiarity head on, carving out a new arena for himself while rigging the grounds with pitfalls at every step.

Since their first partnership on 2000’s “Memento," the work of Oscar-winning DP Wally Pfister has helped shape and define the trademark style of Christopher Nolan and his output. His influence has proved so pronounced that Nolan’s upcoming “Interstellar” will mark an unclear break in DNA, it being “The Dark Knight” director’s first outing in 14 years without his usual collaborator.

Next week, he's the man behind the music in Wally Pfister's "Transcendence," and a preview of his work is here.

The common complaints about movie marketing run the gamut from campaigns that give away for too much before the movie opens, trailers that spoil key moments in the film or just flat out inaccurate representations of what the finished product may be. But the thing is, marketing departments don't care about any of that stuff. Their only job is to make people interested enough in buying tickets on opening day—that's it. So if that means showing the sexiest part of the climatic moment in the film, so be it. Or in the case of Warner Bros., if it means making up dialogue to fit the tone of a trailer, that's what they'll do.

Ever since he landed on the 2012 Black List, Jack Paglen has held some enviable company: next week sees the release of “Transcendence," directed by Wally Pfister and starring Johnny Depp, and last summer he was revealed as the new writer for Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus 2”. Tackling the sequel to a thorny franchise turned out to be troublesome however, as writer Michael Green replaced him on the film, but it seems Paglen has recovered nicely with another high-profile sci-fi project.
