Transcendence
Stepping out from the shadow of Christopher Nolan, at the age of 52, to make your directorial debut, might have a lot of baggage and expectations attached to it, but Wally Pfister is ready for it. "If people are expecting Nolan-lite, I think they'll be surprised," he told the LA Times last month. "My training comes from Chris, but my emotional content comes from a different era. I'm steeped in a 1970s, pre-'Star Wars' period, films like 'Soylent Green.' Chris comes from a different place."

Transcendence Wally Pfister Rebecca Hall Paul Bettany
"....singularity, is a theoretical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Since the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence (akin to a gravitational singularity) beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable." So goes the the first couple lines of the Wikipedia entry on the subject, and the question is: can Wally Pfister turn that thematic material into a big screen, mainstream success in "Transcendence"?

Transcendence
Embarking on his feature directorial debut, Wally Pfister has employed one of the key tactics he's learned from his many years working with friend and collaborator Christopher Nolan: secrecy. Until now, much of the project was shrouded in mystery, but with a spring release date and a marketing campaign now getting rolling, the shroud is being lifted.

Iron Man 3, Rebecca Hall
Rebecca Hall, in just a handful of roles, has become one of our favorite actresses, someone whose presence makes any project endlessly more exciting. Most of us first remember seeing Hall in Christopher Nolan's underrated magician thriller "The Prestige," and she made a splash not long after in Woody Allen's hit "Vicky Christina Barcelona" (she played Vicky), before turning in ace supporting performances in Nicole Holofcener's "Please Give," Ben Affleck's "The Town," the 1974 section of "Red Riding Trilogy," and this summer's "Iron Man 3" (as a brilliant scientist who creates something very bad). She's a fearless actress, bringing both a tightly coiled intensity and disarming beauty to her performances. This is the especially the case in this week's "Closed Circuit," where she plays a lawyer trying a terrorism case in Britain's controversial closed court proceedings (she's also involved romantically with another lawyer, played by Eric Bana).

To say that plot details surrounding Wally Pfister's "Transcendence" have been kept locked up is an understatement. Employing the veil of secrecy utilized by his former boss Christopher Nolan, Pfister has headed into his directorial debut with an all-star cast (Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy) and story details thus far that haven't gone beyond something vague about a scientist getting his brain uploaded to a computer. Or something. Well, a few more details have found their way to the internet.

Clifton Collins Jr. is one of those reliable character actors who sometimes get taken for granted, but who can pretty much do it all. There's a reason directors like J.J. Abrams ("Star Trek"), Edgar Wright ("Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World"), Jim Sheridan ("Brothers"), Bennett Miller ("Capote"), Terrence Malick (his upcoming music scene movie if he doesn't get cut) and more have called on him, and how he's lining up a role in one of next year's most exciting, mysterious projects.

If there has been an unofficial rabbit's foot in Christopher Nolan's last run of films, it would have to be Cillian Murphy. The actor has appeared in all three "The Dark Knight" films, as well as "Inception," and now he's moving sideways into the directorial of Wally Pfister...produced by none other than Nolan himself.

Hey wait, shouldn't this be: Morgan Freeman joins Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar"? What gives? At any rate, Nolan is producing Wally Pfister's directorial debut, and it seems it's all about keeping it in the family.

While her sister was the one rumored for a part last fall (that eventually went to Rebecca Hall), the equally talented Kate Mara has found herself vaulted into one of the most intriguing movies on the 2014 horizon.

Sorry Rooney Mara and Emily Blunt, this one belongs to Rebecca Hall. After being rumored alongside the actresses last fall as contenders for the female lead in Wally Pfister's "Transcendence," Hall has emerged the winner and will star alongside Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany in the mysterious movie.
