Christopher Nolan’s name sits central to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, with three distinct entries, a towering worldwide box office take, and a new vision of how superhero films could be created. But alongside him and writer/producer David Goyer, producer Charles Roven was and continues to be a key collaborator to that duo’s creative process.

Back when "Zero Dark Thirty" was known as simply a "black ops thriller," Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal had been brewing another movie, something called "Triple Frontier" (which in early stages was also known as "Sleeping Dogs"). It was an equally big project, described as a multilingual, "Traffic"-esque tale set in the notorious, crime-ridden border region between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay known as "la triple frontera." At one point, it was even being positioned to shoot in March 2011, but of course that didn't happen. So what is going on with the movie?

"The Hurt Locker" Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow might have a big head start over the competition with her Osama Bin Laden project, which just got picked up by Sony, but switching over to that film means that another of her projects has some competition that might well pip it to the post. Bigelow was originally meant to follow up her awards success by reteaming with writer Mark Boal (who's also writing the Bin Laden project) on "Triple Frontier," an action-drama starring Tom Hanks (and potentially Johnny Depp as well), a "Traffic"-style multi-stranded tale focusing on the border between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, a crime-ridden area rife with drug traffickers.

Could Kathryn Bigelow's international drug trade drama "Triple Frontier" be closer than we initially imagined? The long-gestating project was thought to be earmarked for an early-to-mid 2011 shoot until reports surfaced last month that director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal were shopping around a new film, a black-ops thriller that would shoot before "Triple Frontier" which had been pushed to a fall 2011 start, to theoretically accommodate Johnny Depp one of the first names linked to the project. But it seems something in those reports was slightly off.

After walking away with Best Picture and Best Director (among others) at last year's Oscars, it's no wonder stars have been lining up to star in whatever Kathryn Bigelow's cooking up next. And though the likes of Sean Penn, Will Smith, Javier Bardem and Christian Bale have been linked to the gestating "Triple Frontier" (aka "Sleeping Dogs") the picture now has its first cast member. And it doesn't get much bigger than this.
