Even though little has been heard from the film, upcoming baseball drama "Trouble with the Curve" will mark Clint Eastwood's first on-screen role since 2008's "Gran Torino." It will also be the first time since 1993's "In the Line of Fire" that he isn't directing himself. But he's got a trusted friend and collaborator behind the camera in Robert Lorenz -- making his directorial debut here -- who has worked as an assistant director to Eastwood on "Mystic River" and "Million Dollar Baby" and is partner with Clint at his shingle Malpaso Productions.

Clint Eastwood doesn't mind keeping it in the family. His son, Scott Eastwood, is following in his dad's footsteps, paying his dues with roles in the upcoming "Leatherface 3D" and "Of Men and Mavericks," but Clint has lent him a hand in his career giving him small roles in "Flags of Our Fathers," "Gran Torino" and "Invictus." And now, father and son are going to team up again.

John Goodman is no stranger to the baseball diamond. He famously put on the pinstripes to portray none other than Babe Ruth in "The Babe" nearly two decades ago. But this time, he's going to be off the field for his next baseball-themed film.

Say what you like about Justin Timberlake, the man is serious about his acting. The former boy-bander started to gain grudging respect of film fans with small turns in films like "Alpha Dog" and "Black Snake Moan," before winning over many thanks to his supporting role in David Fincher's "The Social Network." Now, despite star vehicle "In Time" failing to convert at the box office, he's pretty firmly cemented as an actor, rather than a musician pursuing vanity projects; he was winning and funny in "Friends With Benefits" and "Bad Teacher," even if the films weren't, Warren Beatty considered him for the lead in his Howard Hughes film, and he's not released a record in nearly six years (although he guested on a couple back in 2010).

Hollywood, generally speaking, does not care about old people. Despite the teen audience seemingly flagging, the studios continue to chase that precious 13-25 demographic, leaving only a handful of pictures to cater for those over 50. But every so often, older audiences will turn up in droves -- think "The King's Speech" or "True Grit" or "Gran Torino" or "Julie & Julia." It's a hard crowd to draw -- they won't simply turn up every opening weekend, which is one of the reasons executives never quite know what to do for them. But if we do know two things about that demographic, it's that they love Meryl Streep and they love Clint Eastwood.

While we, or at least this writer, had a number of problems with "The Descendants," the actors were not one of them. From leads George Clooney and Shailene Woodley to brief supporting roles from the likes of Judy Greer, Robert Forster and Rob Huebel, everyone pretty much brought their A-game, and no performance in the film was more surprising than that of Matthew Lilllard. The actor, who broke out in "Scream" before going on to play Shaggy in the two "Scooby Doo" movies, had been absent from the big screen for nearly five years, but gave a terrific little performance in a key role, one very different from the kind of part he'd played in the past.

With "J. Edgar" now in theaters (sidenote: don't believe the vitriolic reviews, it's uneven, but lots to admire) Clint Eastwood has a bit of free time. His next film is supposed to be "A Star Is Born," but with the lead star, Beyoncé preggers, production has been put on hold. So what's he gonna do instead? Take a lead role in "Trouble With The Curve," the directorial debut of his longtime colleague, friend and Malpaso Productions pal Robert Lorenz. While Sandra Bullock was one of the first names to be looking at the co-starring role, she has moved on and now two more names have surfaced.

"Gran Torino" was allegedly supposed to be Clint Eastwood's last acting job. At the time, the 81-year-old filmmaker, who directed, produced, and partly scored the film with his son Kyle, said the role would most likely be the last time he acted in a movie. But never say never, especially when friends are involved.

If a young whippersnapper like Brad Pitt can make a baseball movie, why not Old Man Eastwood?
