Tribeca Review: Hollywood Satire 'Trust Me' Continues Industry Self-Love Designed As Self-Mockery

It takes some audacity to open your film with an homage to "Sunset Boulevard," but that doesn't seem to worry Clark Gregg. A journeyman actor valued by filmmakers like David Mamet, Gregg has had a dynamic few years, making his directorial debut with Chuck Palahniuk adaptation "Choke" and an attention-getting role in "The Avengers." Bold as all that may be, he has used this clout to front "Trust Me" as both an actor and director, and you wonder if this reliable screen vet isn't stretching himself a bit thin at this point.

Running from April 17-28, the 12th incarnation of the Tribeca Film Festival starts this week. It's a festival which has only grown in stature and confidence over the years; those awkward toddler years in which the line up was rather unwieldy and the standard a little haphazard are now just a distant memory. And if you consider the festival's timing -- sandwiched between the titans of Sundance and Cannes -- the fact that it has managed to carve out a well-respected identity for itself, and not simply be seen as a potted version of one or an extended trailer for the other, is all the more impressive.

In anticipation of the Tribeca Film Festival, the first-looks keep moving along. Let’s start with new photos from "Greetings from Tim Buckley," the quasi-look at the life of singer Jeff Buckley as he performs a concert for his father, Tim. The film, directed by Daniel Algrant, and starring Penn Badgley and Imogen Poots, will be getting its U.S. premiere in the Narrative category at Tribeca.

Since making his directorial debut with the Chuck Palahniuk adaptation “Choke” in 2008, Clark Gregg has appeared in some of the most successful films of the past four years. But now that his relationship with Marvel is seemingly at an end -- provided the studio doesn’t just retcon his death in "The Avengers" -- the character actor is gearing up to return behind the camera with “Trust Me.”
