'Frozen,' 'Planes' & 'The Smurfs 2' Among 19 Finalists For 2014 Animated Feature Oscar Nomination

After our own Drew Taylor declared "Frozen" to be a new Disney classic, perhaps you won't be too surprised to learn that it has been submitted and accepted as a finalist for Best Animated Feature Film. But don't get fooled. The only criteria for the 19 movies that made the cut seems to be that they meet the eligibility requirements so flops like "The Croods" and "Free Birds" along with critical punching bags like "Planes" and "The Smurfs 2" get the same consideration as Hayao Mizayaki's "The Wind Rises." Box Office: 'The Conjuring' Spooks Out Slow 'Turbo,' In-The-Red 'Red 2' & D.O.A. 'R.I.P.D.'

It was a dismal weekend, with total ticket sales down 20% from last year. Not only that, but a horror movie, albeit a pretty good one, has taken the top spot. Did Hollywood underestimate the movie-going public? Do these numbers indicate that America is finally taking a stand against generic would-be blockbusters? Or are movies really now so bad that "Despicable Me 2" is apparently the biggest boon of the summer? Will "The Conjuring" be another flash-in-the-pan like "The Purge" (debuted number one and then suffered one of the largest box office drops of the summer)?

With some DreamWorks Animation movies, you can practically see and hear the pitch meeting that they came out of, as fully realized as any of the whiz-bang 3D computer graphics that will eventually coat movie theater screens nationwide. There are a few executives there, some animators, maybe one of the marketing guys (to represent such vaunted interests as toy manufacturers and video game designers). Someone yells out, "What about a panda bear that does kung fu?" and the rest of the room agrees (and the video game guy gets very excited). Or, in the case of this week's "Turbo," there was probably a meeting after it was widely reported that Disney makes something like $4 billion a year from selling stuff related to the Pixar movie "Cars." "What about a snail… That wants to be a racer?" You can picture the rest of the room sheepishly nodding their heads, and then the guys responsible for the actual movie sweating bullets because, good lord, how do you make an animated movie about a snail that wants to be an Indy 500 racer? It turns out: you don't.

With “Monsters University” still making big bucks in the box office and advertisements for the upcoming “Despicable Me 2” dominating all forms of media, it will be interesting to see how much of a splash “Turbo” can make when it hits theaters two weeks from now. Dreamworks and Twentieth Century Fox certainly have their work cut out for them. They have just released a new trailer for the film and even though most of the footage is similar to the ones that came before, we do get more of a glimpse of the human characters that are in the movie.

Day by day, Netflix continues to movie away from content provider to full on broadcast company, and they show no signs of slowing down. With "House Of Cards," "Hemlock Grove" and "Arrested Development" already out of their original programming gate in 2013, with "Orange Is The New Black" coming next month, the company has now inked another deal that will find even more exclusive shows on their site. We hope your local internet provider is ordering up some new servers.

We're all for high concept movies, particularly when it comes to animation which lends itself to fanciful stories, but this writer at least is still struggling to figure out "Turbo." In short: it's about a snail who gets super-powered with nitrous oxide, busts out of the snail racing circuit (huh?) to compete at the Indy 500 (wha?). Okay, but this better have more than slow motion jokes...oh wait...

2013 looks to be a particularly exciting year for feature animation, with new efforts from almost all the major animation houses, some hotly anticipated sequels (hello, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”), features from some of our favorite filmmakers (Chris Sanders, Hayao Miyazaki) and even a brand new Disney princess movie (“Frozen,” which from everything we’ve heard is going to be ah-mah-zing). One of the bigger question marks for the 2013 slate, though, has been “Turbo,” DreamWorks Animation’s story of a speed-racing snail.

With 20th Century Fox recently picking up the distribution duties for DreamWorks Animation's films (following a profitable relationship with Paramount Pictures that ended somewhat sourly), it was all but a matter of time before the studio announced (via Hollywood Reporter) a fuller slate of movies for the partnership, but this is unprecedented – an ambitious, 12-movie schedule that includes three and sometimes four movies a year, including not one but two "How to Train Your Dragon" sequels and a new paranormal-themed movie starring Seth Rogen.

It's an interesting time for animation at Paramount. For many years they were the sole distributor of DreamWorks Animation's animated product. After this fall's "Rise of the Guardians" though, that will no longer be the case, leaving DreamWorks to fend for itself (the studio is still figuring out what it's going to do but it's looking like Sony will probably distribute, starting with Chris Sanders' caveman romp "The Croods") and Paramount to look for fresh animated product, following its Best Animated Feature win for last year's "Rango." Well, the studio is releasing more details about its next phase of animation. Oh, and DreamWorks released a new photo from its movie about an F-1 racing snail. Whew.
