Last year, Alec Baldwin and director James Toback hit the Croisette, not to premiere a movie, but to try and raise financing for one. They brought along some cameras to help document the effort for what would ultimately become the documentary, "Seduced And Abandoned," an insider's inside look at the fickle game of film financing and the movie biz in general. Now they're back a year later in Cannes with the finished product, set to unveil in a special screening next weekend, but what is this whole thing all about?

After a protracted period trying to get a movie off the ground, only for it to stall and falter for a variety of reason, Fox has finally found a way to revive "24," and sometimes the best solution is also the easiest one: they're bringing it back to TV. That's right, after rumors started burbling late last week that Jack Bauer might be returning to kick ass once again, today the studio has confirmed that more white knuckle thrills are in the cards.

Yet again more proof that working with HBO pays off for its talent, even if the project isn't necessarily the most well received. While you may have already forgotten about it, last year's "Hemingway & Gellhorn" (which was better than most folks gave it credit for) was another display for Nicole Kidman's acting chops. Nominations came in from Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG voters for her turn as a war reporter caught in a torrid affair with the author, and the actress hasn't forgotten about it. She's returning to the network with a project she's shepherding that touches upon a hot button issue.

Um, duh. As if there was any doubt that ABC would send this to series, but now it's official: this fall you're going to be watching "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." as that comic universe keeps getting bigger and bigger...

Despite Antoine Fuqua's best efforts to get it off the ground, the “24” film was finally caught in a development cougar trap last month, with the director admitting “it's not happening.” A matter of star Kiefer Sutherland's schedule and paycheck were cited as reasons, but as the actor's alternative Fox show “Touch” now comes to a cancelled end, it seems the series may be revived at its original platform after all.

Robert De Niro, Alicia Vikander, Kristen Connolly
Writer/director Stephen Gaghan has given us the scripts to Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic” "Rules of Engagement," and "The Alamo," but turned full-fledged filmmaker with 2005's excellent political drama, "Syriana." He hasn’t directed a film since, but not for want of trying. Gaghan’s been attached to several projects over the years, but for whatever reason, none of them have come to fruition. He may have struck gold with the cast of his his latest, “Candy Store.” The picture already stars “Zero Dark Thirty” star Jason Clarke and Omar Sy (“The Intouchables”), but his latest casting coup is even more impressive; Robert De Niro. The acting legend is joining the cast for a story about an undercover agent (Clarke) who begins a new life as beat cop in Brooklyn, but finds that his past life comes back to haunt him. De Niro plays a former cop who teams up with him to stop the threat that could endanger the city of New York. [Variety]

The second season of "Veep" is finally on the upswing after stumbling out of the gate, with last week's episode showing what the writers can do with just a little bit of focus. And this week's "The Vic Allen Dinner" mostly takes the same tack, finding comedic potential in a simple premise and then driving to the hoop and while it might not be a slam dunk, it's a solid alley-oop.
