With Nicolas Winding Refn exiting "The Equalizer" with Denzel Washington, and losing bromatic collaborator Ryan Gosling for "Logan's Run," it might seem that the director is suddenly adrift. But in his back pocket is the "Babarella" TV series reboot, which he signed on to last summer, and it seems things are moving foward on that project with a couple of big names coming on board.

Down at HBO, World War II is in the cards. OK, figuratively. But the Big Bertha of premium cable has taken to the mic to confirm details of another release which has the makings of a new box-set staple and a veritable howitzer to the already-frayed morale of rival networks.

She might be contractually obliged to see out at least one more season of “How I Met Your Mother,” but like the rest of the show’s cast, Cobie Smulders looks like she has a career on the big screen to look forward to once we finally find out who Ted Mosby knocked up. Smulders of course showed up in “The Avengers” last year as Maria Hill – a character who has a lot of scope to develop if the comics are anything to go by – and we’re probably going to see a lot more of her as Marvel’s Phase Two kicks into gear.

Do you have plans next weekend? Well, you might want to cancel them. In case you forgot, on February 1st, Netflix is dropping the David Fincher-produced and directed (well, the first two episodes anyway) political drama series "House Of Cards" in its entirely. That's right, every episode will be available. If there's a better way to beat the winter cold than with a marathon of that show, we don't know what it is. But morever, it appears that Netflix is in for the long haul on this one.

Happy New Year, J.J. Abrams! As January winds to a close, the events of the past week have basically suggested that Abrams is essentially the new Steven Spielberg. Last night, Disney officially confirmed the news that J.J. Abrams has signed on to direct "Star Wars: Episode 7" (see press release below). But of course the big question is what becomes of Abrams' relationship with Paramount?

McG To Direct Pilot For Modern 'Romeo And Juliet'-Esque Show 'Venice'

Ah, McG. Just mention of the name alone is enough to get the vitriol pumping through the veins of Internet movie nerds. The early dislike for the director hasn’t dissipated in recent years after first disappointing the fanboys of one movie franchise with “Terminator Salvation” (although personally we’d have loved to see his much darker ending make the final cut) then returning last year and squandering a fantastic cast (Pine! Hardy! Witherspoon!) on the way to delivering a woefully inept comedy with “This Means War.” Next up for the director on the big screen is the Luc Besson-produced thriller “Three Days to Kill” (currently set to star Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, Hailee Steinfeld and Connie Nielsen), but it also looks like he has plans for a project on the small screen.

Not only was the cat out of the bag months ago, it's pretty much gone and had kittens, but HBO has finally made it real and offical: "Girls" has been renewed for a third season.

Winter may be here but winter is also coming. See what we did there? "Game Of Thrones" season three is a mere two months away, and after playing coy with some cryptic teasers, HBO has pulled the curtain back hard, dropping over twenty new images from the forthcoming season, spread across seven episodes. No, there aren't any spoilers in here as they are mostly tight character shots, but fans will want to sit up and take note.

Ken Burns Is Turning His PBS Doc 'Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise And Fall Of Jack Johnson' Into An HBO Miniseries

You can't really talk about American documentary filmmakers without mentioning Ken Burns. Practically an institution at PBS, Ken Burns has created sprawling, research heavy, detailed documentaries about monumental moments in the country's history, including "The Civil War," "Jazz" and "Prohibition" (he's not one for fancy titles). He's also turned his eye from time to time to sports, with "Baseball" and "Unforgiveable Blackness: The Rise And Fall Of Jack Johnson." And some stories it seems are worth telling again with a bit of cinematic flair, as the latter is headed for the miniseries treatment.

HBO has ordered a half-hour comedy pilot entitled “Togetherness,” to be written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass. The concept is two couples living together under one roof and struggling to keep their relationships alive while pursuing their individual dreams. Sounds like the Duplass brothers are sticking to what works with more reality-based relationship humor.
