It's official -- and in case you haven't noticed -- Benedict Cumberbatch has arrived. The "Sherlock" star already spent 2011 in some pretty high profile fare like "War Horse" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," earned big praise for his turn opposite Jonny Miller in Danny Boyle's stage rendition of "Frankenstein" and has bagged major roles in a couple of upcoming franchise, "The Hobbit" and "Star Trek 2." And he's continuing to add to his impressive CV with a role in Steve McQueen's eagerly anticipated new film.

"Arrested Development" scene-stealer Judy Greer is adding another string to her bow, joining Kimberley Peirce's remake of Brian De Palma horror classic "Carrie." The actress will take on the role known simply as "The Gym Teacher," which we're presuming is the role of Miss Collins in the original, the empathetic teacher who looks out for Carrie and has an instrumental part in the film's climax at the prom.

Scoot McNairy is on a hell of a run at the moment. The star of "In Search Of A Midnight Kiss" finally turned heads in a big way with Gareth Edwards' 2010 low-budget spectacular "Monsters," and ever since then he's been the toast of the town: he met for roles in "Prometheus" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," but ended up going down more grounded routes, with parts in Ben Affleck's "Argo," in Gus Van Sant's "Promised Land," with Matt Damon, in Lynn Shelton's "Touchy Feely" and in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly," for which McNairy earned rave reviews at Cannes this morning (read ours right here).

If you're going to make a film about slavery, one of the last great taboos, it's going to help if you have an all-star cast behind you. It's what Steven Spielberg did with "Amistad," which starred Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman and Matthew McConaughey. It's what Quentin Tarantino has done with his upcoming "Django Unchained," which stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson. And it's pretty much what Steve McQueen is doing with his next film "Twelve Years A Slave."

Two distinguished directors have both been hard at work putting together their Louisiana-based period films about slavery, and now the one least likely to have an Ennio Morricone sample, Steve McQueen's “Twelve Years a Slave,” appears to finally be ready to roll.

Whoever ends up winning at the Academy Awards in a few weeks (spoiler: "The Artist"), Brad Pitt will still pretty much be the belle of the ball. He's nominated for Best Actor for "Moneyball," a film that, without Pitt's perseverance, likely wouldn't have gotten made after Sony pulled the plug on Steven Soderbergh's version, while the star also has a nomination in his producer capacity for Best Picture for the project. His other baby of 2011, "The Tree of Life," also surprised many with nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, and Pitt may find himself with a third nomination if the Academy names him as one of the eligible producers on that film.

To say Michael Fassbender has had a big and busy 2011 is like saying Herman Cain had an unsuccessful campaign run. It’s a massive understatement. In 20 months he shot six films – “Jane Eyre,” “X-Men: First Class,” “A Dangerous Method,” “Shame,” “Prometheus” and Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action thriller “Haywire," the film for which he’s currently doing press rounds.

There is no greater arthouse bromance right now than the one between director Steve McQueen and actor Michael Fassbender. The duo first paired up on "Hunger," which brought them both some considerable attention, and this year they are dominating the fall movie chatter with the NC-17 sex-addiction drama "Shame." They've already lined up their next collaboration, "Twelve Years A Slave," which also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, and now one of the biggest actors in the world is lining up to join them.
